My small town has a convenience store, gas station, Video store, church and the Rotary club and that's it. The plumber has his shop in his garage.
Meister, I think your place is referred to as a "village" and not a town. Do you at least have a stop light?

No stop light. But, there are a lot of people in our village with same last name.

Not sure I spelt it right, the wooden huts used on canoe trips. You could also get one of those john-on-the-spot houses used on construction sites, or crap outside in the bushes, you said you live in a small town, nobody will notice....

Well, I am balding like he is but he is one BIG MuthaEffer.....and I'm just a wee lad.....As to my posts in the other thread: I agree with Mike's ideals about doing it right the first time I disagree with some of his comments about the contractor is always at fault.....

As for gas fitters, yes some extra training will enable a plumber to be a gas fitter but a pipe definitely is NOT a pipe. The codes for gas lines are totally different than for water and even sprinkler pipe. While the concept is basically the same the execution is different. Plus you have the inclusion of the pressure regulators etc to deal with.

One MAJOR difference between a plumber and a pipe fitter: If you have a water pipe leak, you get a little wet, if you have a gas pipe leak, you can get a lttle dead.....

Quite correct tboy and in no way did I mean to understate the differences, just to point out the similarity, one that may be why asking your plumber if he also does gas can save you a separate call.

PS: Don't breezily ask if he passed gas as an apprentice

Not to discount plumbers and electricians but in my experience, unless you are re-wiring an entire house, most common electrical tools can fit into a pouch hanging on your hip. For the majority of jobs, I only need a pair of linesman pliers, needle nose pliers, multitip screwdriver, a circuit tester and electrical tape.
You forgot to add your license, God forbid the building burns down.
Get a licensed electrician to do the work, they have the knowledge and the insurance. I do handyman repairs for my friends and family all the time but in any commercial application, or someone you don't know, cover your ass and have a pro do it. The LAW is very clear on this and getting clearer.

My plumber replaced a small inline valve. Total time 10 minutes, total cost 115.00, totally unfair.
Did you know how to do it?
If not, then the price is fair. If he charged you 300 bucks, that's a bit too much but just over a hundred is fair. They work on hourly, not minute wages.

Always make sure that the people who are working on these things are fully licensed.
I had reno's done to my business property and the things I learned was astounding.
The carpenter knew how to do plumbing and electrical but the technical license he needed was absent. For any commercial reno or buildings, make sure you deal strictly with licensed professionals. The key word here is INSURANCE.

And for that price, he included the new valve, plus driving to your house, then returning to the shop (assuming he didn't have another call). Then there's the cost of the van, the cost of the upkeep of the van, his insurance, his overhead, and the cost of his tools.

$115.00 doesn't seem like so much now does it.

There's a range in prices for good work.
I used to deal with a heating/plumbing company that was fairly expensive and I was low on their priorities. Then one of their licensed employees contacted me and told me he was starting his own business, right away I was treated as his best customer and the rates were considerably lower since his overhead was far less. This was about 5 years ago and I'm still pleased with his work.

Get off your ass and find a company who wants an apprentice. The comany will send you to the union and they will let you in.

I think it's the Electrical Safety Authority for electricians:

http://www.esainspection.net/consumer/index.php
actually, all technical work is inspected by TSSA.
Technical Standards and Safety Authority (Assclowns)

Basically it's a racketeering business that has somehow become legitmate. They extort money from businesses in the way of "inspections" that are not asked for. They show up at the workplace unannounced, take their bloody time and bill you $150/hr (or something ridiculous) just for inspection. I had one show up at my business and she took 5 hours just moving around slowly, asking me questions and in the end I got billed a ridiculous sum.

Somebody in my community called TSSA on my business claiming they spelled chemicals coming from here. We were under construction and the fear of leaks was high. The neighbors thought maybe we had hit a fuel line or something. TSSA came, inspected, nothing was being done wrong, no fuel lines were even close. The contractors and I had thoroughly reviewed the site plans before demolition and rebuilding so there would be no fuck ups. The TSSA shows up for 5 minutes, tells me it's okay and then bills me for 1 hour of "inspection". What did she do to inspect? She sniffed the air. WTF IS THAT.

You also have to abide by their safety rules which I agree with because it's for the betterment of society and safety of consumers and employees alike. What I don't like is that they show up, tell me I need a license for certain things you don't need a license for, then tell me I am being fined a couple hundred bucks and when the fine shows up, it's in the form of an invoice. WHAT KIND OF FINE comes as an invoice charged with an hourly rate? Fucking scammers. I never paid them and I called the office to bitch them out. If they are going to fine me, fine, I will take it to court and beat it because I DON'T need a license for what they proposed. But don't disguise your invoice as a fine. FUCKING EXTORTION ARTISTS. They never did reissue a fine and they never followed up with the payment of that ridiculous invoice.

Okay rant done.
