1081i vs 1080p

So I realize that the latest technology is 1080p but with regular programming am I correct to assume that both i and p produce the exact same picture? Also, when you do get HDTV chanels is the picture quality much better with the p? One final question - when do you think 1080p become the standard.

Thanks for all the info. Is it just me that thinks that plasma is generally favored in almost all aspects over LCD. Then why does it seem like LCDs are more popular?

1080p is only useful if you are going to be gaming (XBOX 360, PS3, Wii), or watching high def. DVDs (HD-DVD or BluRay). HDTV only gets as high as 1080i, and there are no plans to change that.

I personally find there to be no difference between 1080p and 1080i unless there is a lot of fast motion going on, in which case 1080p shows more smoother transitions. Actually, I prefer the picture quality of 1080i HDTV programming over 1080p blu-ray movies because blu-ray movies almost always have the annoying black bars and grain.

Interlaced and Progressive scanning do not produce the exact same picture, since each of the displayed fields are offset in time. Most of the time you won't be able to tell the difference, but it does depend on what you're watching (and how fast things are moving).

Xbox 360 is 720p or 1080i, and not even HDMI except for the latest model, so the only difference you might get these days are from watching HD-DVD/Blue-ray or run your computer off it. not sure if there are current plans for upgrading HDTV signals to 1080p but I'm leaning towards no.

It used to be that LCDs lasted longer then plasmas. I dont know if this is the case anymore. I have a LCD which I love. I plan on buying a bigger one in the near future. When I bought mine the guy at the store told said he would recommend LCD before plasma because of the fact that plasmas dont last as long. Again I dont know if this is still the case.

In market for a 32 to 42 for office that also has monitor capabilities. Will have a lot use at least as TV and for 360 online. So does anyone know which I do get longer life out of.

Personally I think how long a tv lasts is low on the list of priorities. They're so cheap now that the top three priorities are the length of warranty, how happy you are with the picture, and how good it looks. You may be better off replacing it every few years than spending a premium for one now, as (just like computers) they get so much cheaper and so much better in quality every year. If you buy from Costco your purchase may be safe for years, I know someone who returned a chair he used for 2 years becuase his chiropractor said it was too big for his body. Costco has a 37" Viewsonic for $799 (I paid $999 for mine in December), which I'm happy with, HDTV looks great on it. Unless you have blue-ray/hd-dvd, this should be fine.

That is no longer true about electronics purchased at Costco. They have changed their policy on accepting returns... I believe that it is limited to 6 months now. too many people in the USA were returning their TV / laptop, etc whenever a newer model came out

I think it's a matter of personal preference. I chose LCD because I thought the picture was better when viewed fom an angle .

If I were to buy one right now, I would either go for the Westinghouse 42" 1080p at Best Buy, $1399, or the Sharp Aquos 42" 1080p at Costco, $1799:

The Sharp is a very good looking tv, excellent picture, beautiful piano black thin bezel.

There are a couple of things I don't like about the Viewsonics: the big ugly flat black bezel, and the less vivid colours compared to the higher end tv's.

Costco has this 42" Viewsonic 1080p for $1249 but it's REALLY ugly, the bezel is huge and the speakers on the bottom are hideous.

Costco bring most of their sets from the US and therefore there are no warranties.Costco gives a one year no question asked return policy( the same length of time as the warranty)
