From my research it seems that it's generally agreed that at large screen sizes plasma generally produces the better picture quality especially wrt to sports and anything else with fast movements. I'm not a gamer so whatever burn in risk there is is irrelevant to me. Is there any advantage to getting an LCD over Plasma? besides the lighter weight.

LCD is more energy efficient.

Traditionally, plasma was the only choice for large TVs, however now LCD's go up to about 42"

I have a Sony LCD for 6 months. The HD channels are great. However I find the regular channels grainy especially if you sit 8 feet away from it. I'm not sure if it is the Sony or LCD in general.

Westinghouse 42" LCD HD Display (requires HDTV tuner)

Dell has a one day sale on the 42" Westinghouse Monitor today. It does not have a built in TV tuner and is 720p. Price is $699 plus tax with free shipping.

Simple:
1) LCD - if environment has natural lighting/artificial lighting
2) Plasma - room has no exposure to light

5andman is correct. Day-time viewing in a room with windows the LCD will perform better. If you can control the light with heavy blinds then Plasma will be fine. Eg. Bedroom, basement environment = Plasma, Outdoor patio, sunroom = LCD.
Plasma is preferred because of its ability to do black and its much higer contrast ratio (10,000:1). The colours are just richer and have a better depth.
Either way look for something that does 1080p.
Also, no need for HD tv tuner. If you want HD you will need a HD cable or Sat box. It amazes me how many people buy these HD TVs but don't have any HD sources (DVD is not HD).

Unless you live in an area with frequent thunder storms like I do and satellite can be unstable at times. My OTA antenna gets the job done as the backup HD source except I keep trying to use my DVR with it.

Samsung DLP rocks and it's not that heavy, but it's a bit beside the point.

It used to be that LCDs lasted longer then plasmas. I dont know if this is the case anymore. I have a LCD which I love. I plan on buying a bigger one in the near future. When I bought mine the guy at the store told said he would recommend LCD before plasma because of the fact that plasmas dont last as long. Again I dont know if this is still the case.

Plasma and light

I have a 50 inch LG plasma that sits right beside french doors that lead out to my deck..absolutely no problems.I think LG plasma is superior to lcd, 15000 to 1 contrast, much better colours and 1 millisec response time. Best lcd can offer is 4 milliseconds. $2195 @ future shop.
