Should I wait for the car companies to give rebates so that they are more competitive with US prices?

Sometime early in the new year you tend to see deals for old stock that haven't sold. You could make a deal then and maybe swindle them on getting it at US prices or better.

Some cars in the States that are a year old sell for like half the price of what a new one in Canada costs.
You could probably buy a car like that down there, drive it up here for a couple of years, and then sell it for the same price you bought it for.

I've seen cars that have a new sticker price up here of 48,900 have a new sticker price down there of 28,800 and their dollar is worth less than ours.

has taken the position that they are not going to lower prices in Canada.(to match US prices because of the Canadian dollar) They will let one of their competitors start and may follow. It's a form of price fixing.

They've made such good profits at Canadians expense they're terrified that a price adjustment will really hurt the bottom line.

That said I believe it will happen.

If I could I'd hold off buying a car for a couple of months.

Some where in Cyber Space
BMW has refused to lower their prices, due to the "resale" value of their cars and the cars that are about to come off lease. They had said the value of a car would be $$$$ and now due to the increase of the cdn$, the car value wouldb be $$$.
Just passing on what I was told

There's a thread around here by 21pro about how easy it is to buy a vehicle in the US and bring it up here. That was all before the condition of the currencies and now it is even MORE advantageous to do it.

Frankly, if you have the $$ I wouldn't buy here....the example of the $20K difference here isn't that unreasonable and pretty normal on higher end vehicles. I've seen the same: Fully Loaded 2 yr old F150 King Ranch 4 x 4. Here? $48K. Ebay motors? $30K

Make it even easier on yourself if you don't have the cash: put it on your american express!!

Why would anyone in there right mind buy a vehicle made by GM or Ford? Those 2 manufacturers are now paying for years of producing shit. The consumer has finally figured out that the Asian manufacturers, particularly Honda, Toyota, have got it right.

Ford Gm and Chrysler simply can NOT afford to offer US prices to Canadians. read my `easier than you think thread`... it explains EXACTLY how to import and register a vehicle that you buy in the US.

It`s very easy and the people at customs are very helpful and friendly.

Well, for one: their trucks are the fugliest POS's on the planet and they charge WAY too much for them. When I was shopping I found the import trucks to be about 20% higher than their N/A counterparts. You will also find you will get a better equipped vehicle for a lot less money. If you're going to keep the truck forever, it might mean something that it might last 10 yrs or more. But if you're leasing for 3 yrs? Who gives a rat's ass that it will last 10 yrs, I only want the best 3.

I have seen in the news lately how the government has been pressuring retailers to lower prices due to our strong dollar and I have heard mention about auto prices too.

I still don't see why they are SO much more expensive here....I could understand maybe a 5 or 10 percent difference but we're talking as much as 25% in some cases.....

I know with many items it relates to smaller market therefore higher pricing but when you're rolling vehicles off an aseembly line, it isn't THAT much more difficult to put in the daytime running light controller, a metric speedo and billingual stickers.....I mean, I could even understand shipping etc if the vehicle had to come from the heart of texas but some of the fricken vehicles are built in oshawa and oakville.

Go hybrid. For so many reasons.
For just bombing around in the city, I'd say yes. But there are drawbacks to hybrid: you have 2 complete engine systems (gas and electric) and you have the extra weight and volume of the batteries which limits cargo space etc. You also have the extra upfront costs (although I haven't researched it to determine exactly what those costs are).

Honda and Toyota, who build cars in Ontario, decided to lower their prices. Certainly would be the end of one or more of the big three.

Between here and there.
Don't go hybrid. For so many reasons.

Hybrids are a great evolution in car engine technology but still not ready for prime time just yet. If fuel economy is your goal, a modern diesel engine is just as economical (or more so if you account for the upfront costs of hybrids) and just about as clean running. Diesels will also likely be cheaper to operate over the course of the car's life as well when maintenance and repairs are factored in. Euro brands have the best diesel engines and technologies. Toyota Prius Hybrid or VW Jetta TDi? Go TDi.
