From a driver's perspective
I have been working in pizza joints for 20 years and delivering part time on and off for the past 15 years now. I started with Pizza Pizza but I have also worked in Pizza Nova, 241 at various pizza joints and different cities. I have never heard.....at least for Pizza Pizza giving out or even splitting the delivery charge with drivers. So Pizzaboo, I don't know which joint you own or work for but if it's Pizza Pizza, let me know. I may want to go there and apply for a job. Never heard Pizza Pizza giving out the current $2.75 delivering charge to drivers. So let's understand how it usually works before determining an acceptable amount of tip for the drivers.
Generally, pizza delivery has always been either paid per hour or per delivery, which ever is higher. It's about 4 deliveries per hour. Wages usually range from $6-$8 per hour or $1.5-$2 per delivery. For example, if you get paid $8 an hour or $2 per delivery and you delivered 25 deliveries in 5 hours, you get paid per delivery because that's $50, $2x25 versus $40, $8x5. If you only have 10 deliveries that day, then you get paid by the hour for $40 versus $20, $2x10. On top of that, usually WE PAY own gas. Now, that's a very general concept as different stores have different policies. That's detemined by the location. Some joints are willing to pay higher premiums because they are in the suburb.
I was told that the explanation for the delivery charge is to facilitate the cost of having the pizzas delivered, NOT to be paid out partly or in whole for the drivers. A lot of people out there have the misconception that the "charge" goes to the driver because it's never explained properly. People usually never ask when placing orders. The order taker will never bother to explain because it will take too much time to explain. It's only when the pizzas get delivered that they realized what they ordered was a little higher than what they expected. For example, minimum charge of $9.99 on delivery order will arrive at your door for $14.52. That feels like a 45% on tax.
With that being said, drivers usually know which homes don't tip. We won't bother with those customers or at least I don't. Trust me, there are many out there. However, if they ask why such high after charge, I usually will take my time to explain. So here you go, the general pizza delivery business.
Now with the proper amount of tipping. I always have the 10/5/50 rule. That's 10% up to $5 on deliveries up to $50, give or take 50 cents. For deliveries more than $50, I think a minimum $5 is fair. I also take into consideration on what the "content" is. If the order involves various products such as pizzas, pops, chicken wings and fries; I'd look forward to a better tip. If someone orders $50 worth of chicken wings, I am ok to have paid less tips because I am really just bringing a few small boxes over.
Other than that, weather plays into the equation too. If there's a heavy rain or snow storm, please understand that we are putting our lives at risk trying to deliver your food that "you don't want to cook" on time. Holiday season also plays a HUGE factor. Please be generous during the holiday seasons. That includes long weekends.
I would also like to include some tipping etiquette if anyone is still reading here. If you don't have spare change, all you need to do is say "sorry, got no change". There's really no need to say that you need it for the bus tomorrow or you will give a better tip next time. Don't have your small children to do the dirty work and have them give out the exact change. If you have teenager children, make sure they are not keeping that few dollar tips as their pocket change. I've seen too many of those. I have no problem getting quarters, loonies and even pennies. Just make that you counted them before giving them out. Have them sorted before the driver arrive. Most often drivers are on multiple orders & they simply have to go on to another after your delivery. Oh, turn on the front light so we can see your house better at night. It doesn't cost that much for the electricity or you can take it off our tip, it's on me.
Sorry for the ranting but I just want to let it all out once and for all. Civic out........
