With all the negative stories of pit bulls in the news the last while I thought it was nice to read something positive for a change.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Two dogs whose breed has a reputation for being mean played the roles of rescuers for a woman who was being attacked by another dog.

A red chow was on top of Angie Pecoraro, 22, in her yard on Monday when two pit bulls jumped over a fence and fought off the chow, Nebraska Humane Society spokeswoman Pam Wiese said.

Witnesses said the chow had bitten Pecoraro several times on her hands, arms and stomach, Wiese said.

An ambulance took Pecoraro to a hospital, where she was treated and released, Wiese said.

The Humane Society impounded the chow, and its owner was ticketed for not having the dog restrained and for harbouring a dangerous animal. It will be quarantined to make sure it doesn't have rabies, Wiese said.

I find it surprising that these pit bulls didn;t kill the chow.

I dont find it surprising, thats what the dogs were trained to do. "Ward off but dont attack." Some sporting dogs are trained this way to deal with wild animals.
I am not an anti pit bull person and that was not the intent of my post so if you took it that way what can I do. I have owned Bull Mastiffs in the past who also had a bad reputation and understand that dogs despite breed, can be trained to do marvelous things.

However from what the story says, for a dog to be that well trained to be able to reason that they should stray from their property by jumping over a fence (something that I assume they would never dare do unless this situation) in order to save a life but not inflict mortal injuries to the offending animal. If thats the case than that's pretty scary smart for a dog.

I don't find it surprising. With proper care and training they can be just like any other breed of dog. They can be very persuasive without inflicting harm. Speaking from personal experience, where I needed protection and one of my pitbulls lended a paw (so to speak).

I'm not saying you're anti pitbull, just stating my two cents.

I hope this violent chow dog is put down and the 2 life-saving pitbulls are each rewarded with a much deserved medal.

Ciao,

Would agree. More likely these two Pit Bulls got loose, and were out roaming the streets looking for another dog to attack, spotted the Chow, and attacked it.
More likely it happened as reported.

I have a Staffy and he is the best dog I could ask for. He'll do ANYTHING I ask of him and he loves to play with children. My backyard faces a Jr. public school and when I take him for a walk in the schoolyard and the kids see him they go nutz and surround him petting, kissing, hugging him. I'm talkin bout 2 dozen kids surrounding him hugging him. He LOVES it and sometimes I think he's going to have a heart attack cause his tail wags at 100mph and he lay's down on his back and just savours the hugs/kiss's.

I'm not surprised those APBT saved that women. People are pretty ignorant and listen to the media regarding this breed without actually researching about the breed and finding out just what kind of dog they are.

I know one thing though, if 2 dogs/animal of anykind were to attack me or any children my dog would fight those dogs to the death to protect them...

Chow's are one of the most dog aggressive breeds out there. They don't like ANY dogs and love to fight but I guess because they dont have a scary name like "Pit Bull" CityTV will never mention them in the news.

Research before labeling..... :(

As a former owner of a Staffordshire/PitBull I find it sickening how the media has destroyed the reputation for this breed more then any one dog attack ever did. Over the last few years whenever they have ran stories on "amazing dog rescues" and "dog saves family" stories it is never surprising to me just how many of them involve Staffordshires. Yet these stories are usually ran in the back of the paper in small headlines, were as the abused, neglected, or incorrectly trained dogs were on the front page after biting someone. My PitBull was the most intelligent, loyal dog I ever owned, and I grew up on a hobby farm with German Sheppards, Great Danes, American Eskimos, and a Doberman over the years my parents had it. You could teach my PitBull any trick and she would have it down in less than an hour. Out of control breeding and asshole tough-guy wannabees that would train their dogs to be aggressive have ruined that chance for many dog lovers to discover such an amazing breed.
