Got one from 9 years ago, found it in the attic.
Would anyone want one for free even?
Or should I just trash it altogether?

I'd check on eBay or CL (er ... CraigsList) for comparables & then see if it's worth your bother. There seem to be a couple samples under "Pioneer tape deck", but I'd have no idea what model, condition, etc.

Some can be very collectable (larger models with fluoroscan meters do well). Most are generally crap. Send me a model number and I can let you know.

way out in left field
Now if you want a collector's item look for a Nakamichi Dragon or some of their other decks. I remember back in the day those were THE ultimate in audio quality....

Yeah, those were cool....I believe those were the ones where their idea of auto-reverse was to physically flip the tape around to play the other side, rather than just run the cassette in the opposite direction.

salvage value

even vintage collectors don't value pioneer decks

nak decks in mint condition are going for $100
if you can find a buyer

ask yourself
when was the last time you listened to a tape
or watch video on vhs or beta

sometimes the good old days weren't so good

You are right. If it was a Nakamichi or a ReVox, then, .........

You're absolutely correct. The reason being was that the tolerances for moving the heads was so narrow that they determined it would be better to flip the tape instead of constantly moving the heads. They also used this feature on mor decks in the $500.00 range.

Another point is that that $1000.00 is in 1980 era dollars. In today's dollar that'd be like buying a 72" plasma....

As for tape/beta. I'm not sure if they still do, but for the longest time all studio video was still on beta long after it was taken off the consumer market.

As for dynamic range, CD's are limited to 20 hz - 20 khz where tape isn't. I actually had a test tape that went from 8 hz - 37 khz....

tboy;

That is so true. And, even my old ears can hear the difference in the definition of the instruments and the placement of the performers in the old analog versions. But, Sony had to get even with the public for their failed Beta marketing and their Elcassette, they pushed the CD along with Philips. Do you remember the digital cassette that they had come up with that was supposed to be able to play all the old analogue tapes?

Cobster, I am sorry for helping to hi-jack your thread.........

Never had those cassette test tape. But I still got a couple TDK metal tapes - the ones with real metal and clear plastic casings.

Aaa... those memories. I believe I have Steve Howe's solo album on one of them :D

I sold an Aiwa dual deck a couple of years ago for $56 US on eBay. People may be interested, but it's a matter if it's worth your time or if your interested in recycling by selling.
