Pink Floyd wins fight against downloads

The group won a legal battle that prevents songs from its albums being sold as single downloads or ringtones:

This seems like an incredibly stupid decision by the band..

For their stuff up to The Wall, I can see why the band wanted to do that. I really enjoyed listening to those older LP's from side 1 to side 2 ( or 4 ) back then... and really don't see myself getting the same experience or trip had I simply listened to say just A track off the LP.

Indeed!

Why put yourself in a box and limit your options. Your fans will seek out your catalogue anyway.

Those who don't know your music might just be motivated to seek out more of it due to a little exposure to it.

Single downloads and ringtones are just gravy after that.

Trust me, these guys don't need the money. I remember reading an interview with David Gilmour after he had given a large sum of money to charity. He said he had more money than he's ever going to need for the rest of his life.

Anyone who knows anything at all about Floyd knows money was never the motivator for these guys.... I mean, just listen to the song..... Money! Or Have a Cigar.... Even Welcome to the Machine...

They've both made, and blown, and remade a fortune in their careers. They are proud of the music they've made, and don't always view record companies in the best of light, so to speak.

Good for them, bad for me.... How cool would the end solo of "Comfortably Numb" be as a ringtone!

Good for them on winning over EMI.
That said it won't stop people from downloading their music which is still freely available on the www.
