Pierced Tongue & STDs

I have a female friend who has a pierced tongue. Its on of those barbell type piercings. We got to talking about its pro's and con's and I mentioned that the piercing probably makes her more susceptible to STDs when giving head. She said thats only for the first month or so but that since she's had it for years it doesn't matter.
Frankly I just found it hard to believe that the "skin" around the piercing would heal enough to not cause any increased risk.
Any one know the real answer or a link on this issue?

a piercing is like having a wound. It heals. The risk after healing is no greater than a non-pierced person. Besides, if risky matter is going in her mouth the risk is there, whether she is pierced or not.

Ocean, I've had my piercing for over 2 years now. After the amount of DATY that I've done, my tongue would've fallen off by now if it was infected.

The most important part is the initial time after the piercing is done. Allow it to heal. After that, there's no worries, as long as you take care of it.

Well all should be fine really...till say a clasp comes off and the sword like pointy thing lacerates and perforates Mr. Happy...the better the head, the higher risk of losing yours!

I've had mine for the last three years, love it and the reactions I get to DATY. [smiles innocently]

after care is very important and just as important, make sure the piercing is fitted correctly. [the initial piercing is veyr very long to allow for swelling....]

4gauge bar and loving every second of it.

I'd like to thank the woman who convinced me that it was a good idea to get mine pierced. [she showed me what the fuss was all about and was in a glowing happy state from DATY when i asked her if she felt it was a good idea to get pierced].

Can you give yourself a STD if you go down on yourself with a pierced tongue?

It is a muscle that is pierced and therefore it is seen as a risk factor, muscles don't heal like flesh does apparently according to Doctor dude.

The muscles in the tongue run down the sides and are blanketed by a thick layer of skin and taste buds. Piercings do not penetrate the muscular portions of the tongue, just the skin.
