Now I have some amazing travel plans booked for the next year and I do alot of photography (digital).
My problem is I do not like to haul a laptop around to some of the exotic locations I am going to.
So I was thinking of buying one of those mini laptops.....8"screen and such....for storing pictures and looking at them while I travel.
but I was also looking at the devices that are like 20 to 80 gig of storage with small 3" screens.....

What do people suggest is a better idea and what models would you suggest to look at.

Price is some what of a factor.....but not the main factor.

Go with a Dell Axim, HP iPaq or an Asus MyPal as they have SD slots for viewing digital photos and can surf the next, play mp3's and check email.

Or you could go with an Archos portable digital media player.

Hope that helps.

What type of card do you use in the camera? That may narrow your choices.

I have a 1Gig and a 256M....but that is not enough for the trips....

Well I was not really looking for a PDA style.....as they are pretty cool....

but the "Archos portable digital media player"...that is what I am looking towards...nice....

Any other sugestion or recomondations?

Get a used 12" ibook with a 40gig hd. You can get them for about $300.. Its durable, good storage and a decent monitor. You can email and store pics on an email account somewhere. These are the little white "chicklet" computers.
They're very durable and fast enough to edit video as well as store pics. This is what alot of the freelance guys in the middle east are doing now.

Since it's XD..you're shooting primarily jpegs. What is the megapix of the camera to determine how large each file will be?

Didn't someone used to make a dock to transfer photos from a memory card into an iPod? That way you can have you music and videos with you too while you travel

JPEG and RAW are what I am shooting in......along with a 6megapixel camera....so my photos are pretty detailed....
I am not worried about emailing or doing editing while I am away.....mostly just storage and basic viewing.
I really like the idea and options of the Archos......

I am not really concerned with the compatability with the XD card as I will most likely use the cmera cable to download.

Archos with the docking station is looking good.....it also can function as a TIVO / DVD recorder when not traveling...now that is cool.

See if you can use a card reader to dock with the USB port. Otherwise your camera will have to be on while uploading and can't be charged for use the next day. Camera's are notorious for slow download speeds as well.

It does not need the computer , just a 2.5" hard drive. I will leave it at that as you seem to know what you are looking for .
