He's distancing himself from Harpo in order to run for the leadership of the party, ala John Baird.
Harper is gone after the next election win, lose or draw.

Fiscal prudence not simply cutting and slashing.

Take marijuana for example.

Social reform to decriminalize marijuana could save billions (?) in federal, and local law enforcement, courts, prisons expenses and not be an "entry" point into the world of criminality for many young people simply because they smoke or sell a weed that is demonstrably less harmful than alcohol. What of the long term economic loss of those who become "criminals" over weed and are permanently disadvantaged for the rest of their lives over a criminal record?

Simple social changes can have economic benefits.

Are conservative policies on sex and marijuana (for example) fiscally prudent?

It's not just cutting and slashing (we can argue that the Liberals did that with respect to provincial transfer payments). Control of interest rates, the dollar and having policies conducive to investment are other measures, and Mr. Flaherty's stewardship guided Canada through some tough economic times while the rest of the world wallowed. Moreover, the Harper regime didn't have as many wasteful government projects or scandals (gun registry, Quebec ad scam, etc.), however, they aren't perfect (Senate scandal).

I do agree with you though on those social reform issues you raised. Unless Harper pumps millions into police budgets, the sex policy may not impact much, and our drug war is not quite like in the U.S.

So basically, if I had to pick between the two parties with respect to pure fiscal management, the Trudeau camp is the unknown, so I'd go with the devil I know, lol. However, this doesn't mean that I'll vote for Harper in November.

Really? I'm not so sure (but I hope you're right).

I agree with a lot of what you said but think there is much more to leading a country than "pure fiscal management".

As red said, they all become corrupt with power and are betrothen to the special interests who put them in power. Two terms is enough for either party before they need to be flushed.

I agree with you too here, which is why consideration of the whole package trumps the economic management score this time for me.

Hey Barca, You and I are are in total agreement on this point! I hate them all as well. As a long-time member of the Liberal Party of Canada, I very much doubt that I will be physically able to vote for Junior. And I agree with James in his loathing of the present Conservative regime (And I also agree that Paul Martin was our best PM, at least in recent years). I suppose there's always the NDP....Can anybody come up with a reason to send any of these clowns to heaven, I meant to Ottawa?
Same as me.

I can't envision myself voting for Junior. He's his mother's son. I would vote for PET in a second flat if I could. But Junior? I just can't.

I have a lot of respect for Mulcair and the question will be whether or not I can get past his party or not. Right now, I don't think I can.

Maybe when Mark Carney comes back from Britain and he takes over the helm of the liberals.

Some MPs, including Cabinet ministers will probably lose their seat and go down to defeat in their own ridings this fall. Maybe McKay doesn't want to take the chance. He most likely has a few unopened golden parachutes anyway and definitely has a beautiful wife.

I will vote for whomever has the best chance to beat Harper.

I am no fan of Junior either. As much as I want him to be better I am afraid he is his mother's son. And he comes off like an arrogant dick sometimes at that. That said I still prefer is the devil you don't at this point. I figure most of Ttudeau's shortcomings can be be overcome by surrounding himself with a strong cabinet. But there is no fixing Harper's lack of respect for our democracy.

I will vote for Mulclair if he has a strong showing in the campiagn despite my skepticism of his party.

I would even vote for a Conservative if they were still around but this ain't your father's Conservative party.

Not to mention their idiotic "tough on crime" agenda that is a proven failure in the US and incredibly expensive, destructive and wasteful

MacKay is a lying bitch who only got this job because his father paved the way. He screwed up every portfolio he held and is not qualified to be Rob Ford's driver. I think these guys are quitting because Harper is such an unbearable asshole and a manipulative dictator that they just can't stand it anymore. Besides, now he'll have his huge pension and appointments on Boards of Directors for corporations he shilled for.
Mulcair is our best hope to rid ourselves of the CRAP menace. A NDP minority would be supported by the Libs and we could get our country back and Harper can fuck right off.

Mulcair backs proportional representation, which may be the only way to keep minority supported parties from becoming majorities.

So what, no one noticed he just had a second kid and has been up there for 18 years?

He may actually be calling it because he has had enough of politics and wants to make money in the private sector for his family.

Either way anyone who chooses to serve that long, whether you agree with his politics or not deserves a at least some respect.

And judging from the humour the PM used when addressing his leaving, it sounds like they are friends.

How can you respect a man who called you a pervert and is willing to put you in jail for an act between consenting adults?

I get around.

Yeah I think he's quitting because after C-36, C-51 and increased fines for cannabis, he's run out of law-abiding citizens to easily turn into criminals through the passage of legislation.
Well, I suppose he could make oil company execs responsible for environmental damage hahahahaha
