The door won't open yo let you out unless you scan the receipt.

A petition has been launched urging Loblaw to remove receipt scanners from its stores.

Earlier this month, the grocery giant confirmed that it was testing receipt scanners at some of its stores in Ontario to combat thefts.

Shoppers paying through self-checkout will be required to scan their receipts on a device to confirm that they paid for their groceries. If a receipt is successfully scanned, a metal gate will open, allowing customers to leave.

Leadnow — an organization that aims to engage the Canadian public on political and social issues — has now started a petition, encouraging shoppers to sign and urge Loblaw's CEO, Per Bank, to rescind the receipt scanners in stores.

"New scanners preventing shoppers from exiting unless they scan a receipt, are creating confusion, bottlenecks, and [an] unjustified sense of embarrassment for Loblaws customers," reads the petition.

Leadnow says that Loblaw executives "deserve to be in the hot seat" as they have "more than doubled their profits since the pandemic – while increasing grocery prices by 22.5 per cent since 2020."

The petition allows signees to send a pre-written letter directly to Loblaw CEO Per Bank, who took on the role in November 2023, replacing predecessor Galen Weston.

Loblaws installs self checkouts, and cuts their cashier wage expenditures in half, but complains when the odd person steals. Can’t get something for nothing….
I'm sure they can find a way, maybe buy something and then walk out with other stuff.

This doesn't make sense, a receipt cannot be printed if you don't pay the kiosk. What does the scanner do at the exit point? check your items?

If you don't like the service go else where. That will give a clear message to the store.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster!

I've got a good one for my grandma's pickles but I don't want to let Loblaws scan and steal it!

But if Galen Jr allows me to publicly shove one 🥒 up his ass on behalf of all Canadians he does it to... I will let them sell them as Presidents Choice!

I wonder if they will they accept a recipe sample for banana cream pie I whip up every night before bed? 🤔

Something a big corporation does has to make sense? Canadians must still be behind in a few things:p...

You mean the Loblaws (previously) Fresh Live , now "Twice Frozen" 50% 30% discounted lobster?

I had a few dates with a woman who was a business analyst with Weston. She quit out of frustration because their warehousing and distribution system was soooooo fucked and there was sooo much internal cronyism/in-fighting that nothing could or would ever get fixed. That is about 10 years ago and I still see milk and egg cartons being stocked with Best Before Dates of like 3 days away!

Can you imagine the food going to waste throughout the Weston organization? And yet they still report obscene profits?

Anyone hungry for a Greedflation sandwich? White Forest-Hill Baloney between shrinkflated price fixed Weston White bred ? Truly the "President' 's Choice"! 👨‍🏫

Metro accuses Loblaw of falsely implicating it in bread price-fixing scheme
Accuses Loblaw and parent company George Weston of trying to spread blame across industry

Metro Inc. is accusing Loblaw Cos. Ltd. and its parent company George Weston Ltd. of conspiring to implicate them in an alleged bread price-fixing scheme.

In new court documents, the Montreal-based grocer denies being involved in bread price-fixing and accuses the companies of trying to spread the blame across the industry and avoid public perception that Loblaw was the sole retailer involved in price-fixing.

“Metro has suffered, and continues to suffer, significant and unjustifiable damage to its reputation, having been falsely painted as involved in a criminal price-fixing conspiracy when it was not,” the retailer said.

Metro submitted a statement of defence and cross-claim to the Ontario Superior Court on Monday, regarding a class-action lawsuit on behalf of all Canadian residents who bought bread after Nov. 1, 2001,

...

The Weston companies knew they would face severe public backlash, reputational damage and potential boycotts if customers saw Loblaw as the sole retailer involved in a price-fixing conspiracy, Metro said in the court documents.

...

The Competition Bureau began investigating alleged bread price-fixing in January 2016.

Weston Foods and Loblaw had previously admitted their participation in an “industry-wide price-fixing arrangement” and received immunity from prosecution in exchange for co-operating.

The class action also names bakery supplier Canada Bread Co., which in June was fined $50 million after pleading guilty to four counts of price-fixing under the Competition Act. It was the highest price-fixing fine ever imposed by a Canadian court, according to the Competition Bureau.

I don’t get the big deal. If you use the self-check out you get a receipt and just scan it.

If it doesn’t open, call someone over, show the receipt and your out.

I don’t get the big deal here?????
Ummmm you're being unlawfully detained until a store employee grants you permission to exit the establishment. I personally like the rights and freedoms God gave me and don't appreciate them being trampled on.

I've yet to encounter this but if there is ever a clip on the news about a guy not scanning his receipt and climbing over the barrier, that's me.

That is going a little overboard in my opinion personally. Do you call the fire department on a camp fire too?

If you have nothing to hide, who cares. Scan your receipt and be on your way.
Ok so say I walk into the grocery store for bacon. Just bacon and they are all out of bacon so I don't buy anything and have no receipt Do I then wait at the scanner for an employee to notice me and come over and interrogate me until they are satisfied with my answers and grant me permission to exit? What if the employee doesn't like the answers I give? Detain me until security comes over and conducts a secondary interrogation? I get it. In these days and times most people have little to no interest in their rights and freedoms. Which is reason their disappearing before our eyes.
