i suppose that would be so they know exactly how far away you are,and perhaps to see if you are 100% sure of showing up.

Hopefully it is a reputable SP. If you have not visited before or if the SP is not reputable, you might find yourself being in danger of being "rolled".

Maybe to give exact directions, instead of mentally navigate the neighbourhood to figure out the landmarks from the random phone booth you chose.
"okay, how do I get to your place from here"
"what do you see?"
"Some guy picking his nose, and a girls with big tits."
"Follow the girl with big tits, if she gets in a green car, knock on the building door...."

Lots of times its so they can visually see you. Make sure you aren't LE or their next door neighbour.

Why is it that the ladies that don't want to take a blocked cell phone number will take a call from a phone booth, doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

I had this happen a few years ago. The booth was visible from the location and they could check you out.
