I find it very annoying to see cars parked in the disabled parking spots without the disablity permits. When you enter bars, the partrons for the most part tend to be able-bodied middle-aged or younger. So why are they so lazy to walk a few extra yards?

I wish I was bigger/more imposing. Then I'd say "Hey, fuckwit! You parked in a handicap space. You don't look handicapped, but if you don't move your fucking car you will be!"

Its all the friggin' SUV Soccer moms who don't want to walk those five extra spaces to get to the mall because they think they're better than everyone else driving their oversized, gas guzzling, economy sucking pieces of crap that they can't even park, let alone reverse, that they never put in 4 wheel drive mode because roughing it means going north or Rutherford Road and staying at a 3 star hotel! WHEW - all in one breath! Damn I hate these little princesses!

Here's another twist,
several years back my now ex had to drop off some papers at Court. While I was waiting in the car ,another car drove up to one of the handicaped spots, with a permit in the windsheild, out jumped a perfectly healthy person, she ran in Court, and back out again in a flash, the driver never left the vehicle, likely he was handi caped, but is that fair ?

Like a lot of things, I think people just don't care. You're handicapped? Tough break, guess I'll take what you can't. That seems to be the attitude I increasingly see.

It's a crueler world out there with a winner-takes-all attitude and a lot of disenchantment. A lot of people talk about respect for elders, but when kids see their parents fighting, drinking, screaming, divorcing, etc., there's not a whole lot of reason to be respectful when the only elders you've ever known were a-holes.

I think that handicapped spots are double standard nonsense. The handicapped piss and moan about wanting to be 'treated the same' and 'being equal' and then the lazy bastards can't walk in from the back of the lot??
Piss on 'em I say!

Aptenodytes - I certainly hope your joking. If your not - you are obviously mentally handicapped - so I'll let your repugnant statement pass without further comment.

Anybody else have any thoughts on this topic? Actually, the more I think about it Aptenodytes - your post has to rank among the dumbest and most offensive comments that I have ever seen on TERB.

Being disabled I depend on these spots. No I can't walk from the back of the lot, since most lots slope away from the place your trying to get to. I find that most people who park there wrongly are just running in for a sec and will be right back. What really pisses me off is when some asshole parks between two cars already in the spots, so that the car is across the line. Maks it impossible to get to your own car. Last guy who did that to me got two tickets. A cop was driveing by and I flaged him down. He wrote a ticket for parking in a disabled parking area, and one for double parking. He was not pleased when he came back out. Oh and I also hate when snow plows yous the spots to pile the snow.

Ah to get that off my chest...

From the Ontario Ministry of Transport web-site re Disable Parking permits: "To qualify for this permit, the individual must be unable to walk unassisted for more than 200 metres in 8 minutes or less without causing serious difficulty or danger to safety or health. A licensed physician, osteopathic physician, chiropractor, physiotherapist or occupational therapist must certify the applicant's condition on the permit application."

It's not a question of being lazy. I've had my cane for about four weeks now. I bought my cane at Yorkdale Shopping Centre (Toronto). I'd parked near the north/east corner where Eaton's used to be and walked to the Shopper's Drug Mart at the North West Corner. I don't know how many time's I walked around this mall in the past, but on this trip, I had to stop and rest my legs three times to make the trip. Three times there, and three times on the return trip. This was also when I decided to apply for the Disabled Parking Permit.

It's not a question of lazyness, aptenodytes. Trying carring grocerices to a car when you need to keep one hand on a cane.

Aptenodytes: I hope you never find yourself in the same situation. Only then will you understand how totally ignorant your post is!

Theres probably a lot of truth in what you say Keebler. But, in the four weeks I've had my cane, I've humbly noticed more consideration from strangers I've encounted: From the young lady at Tim Hortons who offered to carry my finished tray to the garbage, or the young lady who insisted on holding the door open for me.
To those strangers and the ones I've yet to encounter, my humble Thanks.

I once got into an arguement with some loogin at the Wentworth Buildall in Hamilton.

He was some typical hamilton leonard Skynard type, mullet hair do, moustache, thin face, stoner eyes, etc. etc. He pulled into the handicapped parking spot and got out with his daughter.

I said, hey buddy, that's a handicapped spot your in. He got instantly hot like a typical loogin and told me to mind my own fucking business. I came back that my mother was in a wheelchair (she wasn't) and that he should show some consideration. He just walked away, but I wouldn't let it go.

So I called the cops. Who told me that I had to call by-law enforcement (why don't they). I called them, and they never bothered to send anyone out.

Sometimes, you see guys jump out of cars and they are perfectly able bodied, but they have the permit so what are you going to say. They could have a heart ailment, but more likely someone in their family has the permit and they are using it to park.

It's very low class.

There will always be the low class who takes advantage. Permits are issued to the individual, not to a vehcile. The individual it's assigned to is required to sign the permit on the back. If their are two handicaped individuals in a household, then technically they are required to have seperate permits.

Really Retired.....REALLY!
Before both my parents became disabled I wouldn't have thought twice about parking in a handicapped spot just to run in for a few seconds. I likley would not have done it for a lengthy stay mind you.
I remember being at the mall in my hometown with my parents when I was about 15 yrs old. We were parked in the handicapped spot (my mother had a stroke about 4 yrs earlier) waiting for my parents to come back out of the mall when some guy and his little kid pull up right beside us and hop out like it was nothing, he was obviously very much an able bodied person.
I opened the door and asked him why he was parking there and that he didn't look disabled to me. It was mid evening and he had the nerve to turn to me and say "don't those people do their shopping during the day?". I was absolutely shocked, I ended up yelling something at him and he eventually moved his car.

Then on another note last winter Dana and I were at the mall and parked in the closest spot we could find, it had been snowing and we took what we thought was the spot right NEXT to the handicapped space. We came out to find a $300 ticket for parking in a handicapped spot. Needless to say we fought it, there was no way we could have known by the signs that we were actually in a handicapped spot without getting out and shovelling it off to see the paint on the asphalt.

It works both ways but if I see some one parking in a spot without a permit I always say something to them, I don't care how big they are or what they look like. It is just plain rude. Thankfully it has only happened a couple of times.

I just ran into a situation like this on the weekend, the parking lot was empty and the moron parked in the handicapped spot cuz it was close to the Liquor shop. I kindly pointed out his parking situation and he quickly moved the car. However I think the only reason he move it was because I am 215pnd, brown guy with shaved head and goatee and scared the crap out of this preppy youg man.
I can't stand people who are to lazy to walk a few extra steps.

How's anyone going to deduce that you "just dashed into the mall for a second"? From the sign you left? Like: "Back in 15 minutes" on the shop door. Yeah 15 minutes! Starting when? Thanks to the conveniences of modern shopping, even buying gum is a ten minute computer-assisted ordeal. And during that "just a second", how many handicapped folks took my space at the back of the parking lot?
Since there is NO EXCUSE EVER for the able—card in the window or no—to use the handicapped spots, the only possible conclusion is those apparently able folks are, in fact, grievously mentally handicapped. And therefore, by parking where they are'nt entitled, they have demonstrated their right to the very spot! So do feel free to confirm their deficiency in conversation, though noting the absence of a card and the amount of possible fines might be less dangerous.
Or just hope they don't live to reproduce. Offer gum as they walk to the door.

Sorry to hear that. Honest mistakes happen. Who's responsible for the signing? Did you have a lawyer and did you consider counter-suing the mall to recover your losses? If the spot wasn't properly marked or the marks were obscured, you shouldn't have been ticketed IMHO.
