Panhandling has become a very popular franchise.
Years ago you'd see them here and there, but very low key, under the radar.
Lately it's become a popular thing. Can't stop at a busy intersection and not see one.
Usually they stick to one intersection as a designated spot and we get to see them for days and months.
So I began paying a closer attention to them and I must admit, some of their traits I actually admire.
Regardless of weather conditions and elements, they're on post, doing what they do. They don't complain and simply show up to ask for more tax free cash.
They don't care what you think and just stick to what they know best.
And they don't stick to just one outfit, oh no! It's like there is a hidden closet with just the right outfit to wear for that day.
With Covid-19, they came up with a safe and respectable ways to approach you. One day it'd be a hockey stick with a hat at the end. Next days it'll be a broom stick with a small bucket, then a curtain rod with a weaved basket. Very creative people it'd seem.
And their immune system, oh my god. It must be something to envy. Nothing seems to get 'em sick, -30°/+30° - not problem.

Amazing employees they'd be, If only they wanted to work 9 to 5.

I don't think their 5-year plan is that great.

A few years ago, there was a panhandler with Tourette syndrome 'working' at Yonge and College Street. She would say, over and over, "Can you spare some change, please, thank you, fuck you".

5-year plan is reserved for corporate panhandling.

You go to a store and at an entrance someone greets you with "would you like to donate?".

You then walk in, get what you need, go to a cashier or self check out. Scan item and then again "would you like to donate?".

On the way out someone approaches you and asks "would you like to donate?"

They don't come close to the dedication of street panhandlers, however rake in a lot more dough.

My cousin told me about the guy who works the light coming out of the big box stores on Stevenson Road in Oshawa. He'd given the guy a few bucks in the past and decided to chat him up one day while waiting at the light. Found out dude makes ~$400 for an 8-hour day.

I keep waiting for their limo to pick them up when their shift is done.

Call them beggars, not panhandlers. That's all they are. Why do we sugarcoat the practice of begging for money in Toronto? Other cities in the world call them beggars. Or worse.

Been around years and years. I think there was a chapter in "Steal This Book", which didn't sell well for some reason....

I saw a group that were organized, staked out working all corners of the intersection . One held a sign reading "Syrian refugee ......"
Then a cars pulls up ,male driver gets out and screams something and waves them in, they all pile in and drive off. Probably off to the next location.

Can't wait for the reality show Panhandling Wars".

Panhandlers fighting over locations, following a panhandler to his home in the burbs, legitimate homeless vs. scam artists fights, altercations with civilians, street people rituals, rivals/allies, etc. Should be enough material for a 2-3 seasons.
