I spoke to a friend of a friend who is a social worker and she said that some panhandlers/homeless will not accept food from a stranger because they don't know what might be in it. Not all strangers are nice.
PLease.

I think their odds of getting run over by a bus are higher than getting poisoned.

You weren't wrong, but now you are enlightened. They didn't need food or a place to stay. A zillion agencies take care of that. They just want money for drugs.

I have come to believe if you want to help street people, give to the united way or the salvation army. They will feed people, provide housing, try and get them help for their underlying issues.

If you give them money directly you are just fueling their addictions and enabling destructive behavior.

One time, I was just sitting down to open a takeout breakfast bag, and was approached for money. I offered the breakfast bag - no thanks. I offered to walk back and buy them what they wanted - no thanks. Money was the goal.

Toronto panhandelers are not too good at the sport of panhandling.Too many are rude or aggressive after you walk past, a smart panhandler knows after the person walks past , and enter that store, they are going to have you stuck in their mind. If they had said "thank you anyway" or something nice, they can target the peeps with a little compassion, and on the way out they may get, money, food, smokes ect. Seen much smarter panhandlers in other cities.

Some people do all kinds of nasty things to panhandlers/homeless people. They kill them, they pee on them, they set them on fire, etc. There is a law in Florida that makes it illegal to give food to the homeless and it is not because the legislators are heartless.

Anyways, never accept a drink from someone that looks like Bill Cosby.

Just keep walking and ignore them.
+1/ I won't give them a thing. Giving them food and change only makes them more of a bum on handouts instead of looking for work. Also, there's charity places out there all ready they can go to.

I heard of a Japanese ESL student who had not been with a Canadian guy and only had two weeks left in Canada after being in Toronto for a year. She payed forty bucks to a young panhandler in Christie Pits to suck him off in front of her friends.

I'm surprised to still see some people pay cash at the checkout. I once asked a cashier why and she said, right or wrong, that some people are undocumented and others don't qualify for credit. (Maybe money laundering?)
I pay cash 100% of the time. Documented and creditworthy as well.

How many people these days still get an actual pay cheque as opposed to direct deposit ? My wife's employer just this past November went the Direct Deposit.

They do not panhandle for food, most of them anyway. Non addict homeless people will even tell you which one pan for crack, I was talking to one older gentlemen in a wheelchair and he chased a crackhead that came to close lol. Scott Mission gives them 3 meals a day.

Funny thst this topic comes up because not too long ago I saw a girl panhandling and I know her family owns a golf course just north of the city. I know a little bit about her and when we had friends in common she smoked mad weed and drank a lot all while being a teenager. Pretty sure she doesn’t need money for food. I'm willing to be she's graduated to "rockstar" status now lol.

Why do we call them panhandlers when the rest of the world calls them what they really are? They are beggars. Plain and simple. I'm a heartless asshole so I give them nothing, but if you feel so inclined, give them something. Beggars have always existed, and they always will, in every culture and every populated place in the world.

It is obvious what these professional beggars, often operating in gangs to pool their resources purchase with the donations that they collect. The purchases are almost never for food. Many are crackheads and meth heads who should be at CAMH and are unable to gain meaningful employment due their physical and mental conditions. Some panhandlers have been known to turn tricks and might benefit from some provisions of the intent of bill C36. They are often well tolerated by LE unless they become the subject of complaints from the right people or are visible minorities.

It certainly seems like a complex situation with many different circmstances and it seems like many approaches across the spectrum.

For the most part, I only have cash on me if I'm going to an MP ... I'm strictly debit/credit the rest of the time. So, if someone looks particularly destitute or if they have a particularly witty sign or perhaps some pets .. I'm a sucker for animal lovers ... I will ask them if I can get them something to eat or drink. I learned to ask after once having a meal that I just purchased from a restaurant rejected. Now that I ask, I can't recall ever getting rejected and giving them the choice of food or drink seems to be appreciated. I won't buy cigarettes or alcohol for them though.

We here have all our mental faculties intact, but so many people on the street don't. So the fact that they don't go to a food kitchen or accept aid otherwise doesn't automatically make me write them off.

I know the homeless use public facilities and washrooms in public restaurants to clean up but I can't help but wonder when someone is occupying the same stall forever if they are doing something other than relieving themselves or changing attires.

Of course they could be. It might be a homeless dude catching a few winks somewhere warm. Or a CEO having a midday wank. Unless it is the only stall in the place*, don't worry yer head about it.

*and if it is, the polite thing to do is tap gently on the door and yell at the top of your lungs "PUT IT BACK IN YOUR PANTS AND GET THE FUCK OUT, MOTHERFUCKER! I GOT A POINTER DYING TO COME OUT AND SO HELP ME GOD IMMA GOING TO DROP IT HERE AND CHUCK IT OVER THE DOOR IF YOU DON'T GET THE FUCK OUT!!"

I had a similar experience. I offered to take him for a meal in a restaurant.
He refused and said he prefers money. I told him i don't do that and walked away.
Next time i see a panhandler, i approach him or her and ask for money. This sometimes confuses them.
It is their right to panhandle, it's also my right to refuse.

Anyone in real need would have been more than grateful for your generosity. If they want the power of choice, they need to get their life together. There are options out there. Opportunities. This is Canada, after all.

I feel the same way about welfare. We should have food stamps, clothes stamps, rent stamps, etc. Instead we give out free money without oversight. If people receive free money and are able to spend it any way they'd like, they rarely have respect for it. People complain about privacy.... When you're receiving welfare or charity, you have a responsibility to use the money wisely to give yourself a leg up, so that you can try to become self-sufficient. You don't have a right to spend someone else's money as you see fit.

Maybe that's just me. I've seen a ridiculous amount of welfare/disability abuse, and it wears on me.

I too have known people on welfare. Friends of mine. What really makes me LAUGH is when they refer to their welfare cheque as a "pay cheque". I knew this one guy who was on welfare and he would say, "I'm just waiting for my pay cheque to come in" and things like that. It's not a pay cheque buddy. It's welfare, you're on the dole.

Another friend of mine was university educated and was able bodied but just the laziest fucker you'd ever meet. He only got off welfare when Mike Harris cut his payments and tried to introduce "work-fare"
