I saw Debbie Travis use a tool to add a wood grain look when using two complimenting shades. It looked pretty cool, but my apartment kitchen is too small to pull it off.

Stenciling in the corners adds a nice touch, depending on how straight and even the tops of the doors are. For me, because budget is always an issue in my rental apartments, I stick to keeping the doors simple and jazz the kitchen with accessories that I can take with me.

Goober, just imagine Paige from Trading Spaces naked, and I'll concentrate on Lawrence from Changing Rooms starring in a porno, then decorating talk might be just a bit more fun for you.

You should sand lightly and use a tack cloth between coats for a smoother finish. Use a sponge roller and watch for paint build up/streaks in the corners. Take of the knobs off for a cleaner finish and make the painting easier.

Type of Paint!

Whatever paint color you select you must remember to use Melamine (Spelling?) paint. This paint is acrylic in base and adheres to cupboards quite well. It's allows for quick clean up if the cupboards become stained. Melamine requires a adhesive primer to be done before the finish coats.

This correspondence is amazing. I mean, heck, we never ask painters to work as SPs, so why would SP's think they can do painters out of the work....?

Of course, Sara at Roommates is known as an expert painter, who nearly put herself in the hospital last time she took on a major makeover project.

Howevcer, maybe a painting party is required. Ms. Sara, Ms. Annalee, Ms. Vanessa (with gloves to protect her pretty hands) would help Ms. Kitty, and a bunch of us guys could stand around looking helpful, but keeping well out of the way....

TSP -

If you are going to paint anything that has been greasy (like in a kitchen) you should wash the surface with TSP (trisodium phosphate)

Wear gloves and rinse the surface too. A light sanding of smooth surfaces will help paint adhere. The Zinser primer is good and you can get primer tinted to just about match the top coat. This will save on the number of coats you'll need.

All the other recommendations are good too, but I'd still wash first with TSP.

You should make an offer like the old days... you paint my cupboards in exchange for a service you can offer. Kind of like vegetables in exchange for a chicken?!
