I've talked to a few people lately who've given Rogers the boot and are enjoying digital tv over the air. I understand you need a ATSC STB to tune in. I also understand they aren't overly common in tv/electronics stores here (much more availble in the US).

All my leads in the Toronto area so far have been dead ends. Before I go down to Buffalo and get one, any one know any place that sells them?

Thanks!

It has to be something fairly common. All my friends in the US pick up digital without cable and find no problems with the signal.

A lot of new TVs are coming with ATSC tuners since analog broadcasting is on the way out in the US.

I understand that almost all of us probably don't have an ATSC tuner on our TVs but there are many stations already broadcasting digital (Global is lagging the pack) and the over-the-air picture is incredible (no show or ghosting like analog over the air). For those with cable this is really a non-issue, but those who don't, they can substantially upgrade their viewing experience, but the need an external ATSC STB which sort of looks like a Digital Cable box from Rogers.

The ATSC STBs are fairly hard to come by here. Best Buy, Future Shop don't stock them, but Circuit City in the US does.

Over the air is the best way to get free HDTV..... some of the newer LCDs from companies like Daytek, Akai, Westinghouse have the tuners built in...then u only need an external antenna .

Sals tv

I think Sal's TV sales on kingston sell them. You could also check dell.ca for the viewsonic ATSC/NTSC tuner.

More Channels about to start broadcasting digitally in the GTA

CHCH/E! April
Global June (after years of delays)
Omni 1 & 2 July

This will leave TVO as the sole over the air broadcaster as analog only. They'll go digital in 2009 or 2010 they say.

The death of analo in the US in less than a year away now.

Digital over the air signals may see more people dropping cable since the picture quality is better than cable. The CRTC should force broadcasters to transmit a digital signal over their entire coverage area or loose their licenses for areas they don't cover. But too many people associate over the air signals to the poor analog reception in the past.
In reality once you see a clear over the air digital signal you'll want nothing but over the air.
If you think the digital channels rogers offers is how digital looks you have to see what real over the air digital looks like. The rogers digital channels are compressed while the over the air is clear as it is transmitted.

The problem I see is that the CRTC is not going to be on the side of consumers for over the air digital signals. They are going to allow broadcasters to hijack the bandwidth to their coverage area without actually providing a digital signal to those in all of their coverage area. This means broacasters won't need digital transmitters everywhere and no one can use that bandwidth to provide services to an underserviced area.

This will also make the cable companies happy since it will feed the idea that you need cable or satelitte to get a digital signal. Broadcasters complain about cable not paying them for their signal but then rely on cable to get their signal to their coverage areas that cannot recieve their signal. So don't expect broadcasters to support the promotion of over the air digital signals.

I know a few people who get over the air digital and they are in the minority. It is true you won't get the specialty channels that are only on cable but in Toronto with a good location your choices of over the air digital is big. Also you will avoid the substitution of a Canadian signal when the American network broadcasts the same program at the same time a Canadian network broadcasts it.

I hope we will see more antennas going up to pick up free digital signals and more people getting off the monthly payments to cable or satellite.
So if you are in the market for a new televison make sure it also has an ATSC tuner then connect it to a UHF antenna and see what you get. If you never removed your old antenna, that was VHF/UHF from your tower or roof, you can benefit from it now with digital, since a UHF antenna is all you need for digital signals.

I just won a TV that was shipped up from the US, and has a built in digital tuner. Hooked it up to the old uhf loop antenna and was able to pick up about a dozen channels, mainly from the US. Some of the channels did show a noticeable better picture quality then the cable channels. I don’t have HDTV cable at this point, and not sure if it is worth paying the extra cost for the few extra HD stations.

At this point I’m looking at better indoor antennas, but not sure if there will be problems combining the signals from the antenna and the cable into the one connector on the back of the tv. Any feedback would be appreciated.

What OTA stations I can receive

Hi

I live on the 10th floor of an apartment building facing east and south-east. There are other apartments blocking the line of sight to the CN tower. So what stations would I be able to get?

thanks in advance

I think the latest DVD recorders have ATSC tuners now. You can kill 2 birds with 1 stone by using the DVD recorder both as an ATSC tuner as well as to record the program.

Try Sayal and the other small electronic shops on Matheson East (close to Dixie & 401) Missisauga. If you have line of sight to the CN tower you can use a small indoor antenna and get all the Buffalo affliates of all the major US broadcasters all in uncompressed HD with 5.1 surround. I have ATSC but live in a valley so I can't get much, looking to get a large indoor antenna to try out this summer.

Not knowing the specific type of TV you have there may be a seperate coaxial connection for cable and one for OTA broadcasts via antenna. I have seen this on some units. Simply connect the cable to the cable connection and your antenna to the OTA connection for the ATSC tuner.
You should be able to select input.
You could always use a switch box if you only have the one input and switch inputs.
If you have access to a roof top UHF antenna that would be best. I have not tried indoor antennas so I can't recommend any.
