I was just wondering if anyone saw what Ovechekin and Malkin did last night against the States. From what I heard they both scored empty net goals and taunted the U.S bench. I just wanna know how or why they did that. I always heard Ovechekin was cocky but I'm surprised Malkin taunted them as well. Thanks.

I just saw the highlights on Headline Sports.
Ovechekin just jumped on his bench and went for the group hug!! Didn't seem so bad to me!!

Malkin's move seemed worse in that he actually skated by the American's bench and wagged his figure or shook his fist at them (something like that).

As for why? I guess they don't like the Americans too mcuh!!!

From what I understand Ovechkin got hit in the face before he scored and he went up to their bench, showed them the Russian logo and also his name on the back.

I read that they were fed up with the cheap shots the Americans kept giving them. This is what I read...not from what I saw.

Still surprised by Malkins actions as he is normally a team player and not a cocky player at all.

a russian player, who scored the third goal, was also quite cocky, as after he scored, he put his hand to his ear, mocking the american crowd.

as for ovenchkin, he is cocky, but it was not all that bad. what malkin did, was downright idiotic. i am surprised he didnt get a knock upside his head for that one. kudos to the americans for not retaliating then and there. make no mistake about it, the americans probably trash talked all night long to the russians, and did give numerous cheap shots to them, but, so did the russians.

next up, canada...let's see malkin try that stuff with our boys! i dont think the russian's will be celebrating much tomorrow nite anyways! hope i am not proven wrong, but, i just dont see the boys losing. canada also has a heavy hitting blue line corps, led by dion phaneuf, who will keep these two boys on their toes all nite long. i just hope phaneuf catches malkin with his head down once...his actions merit it!

The game was chippy, and PLENTY chippy by the end - I listened to the whole thing on The Fan 590. It was give and take on BOTH sides.
That having been said, those Russkies had better learn to cut the shit after they score. It was total bullshit, rubbing it in like that - reminded me of the NBA.
They won't have much chance of similar celebrations tomorrow night, much to their dismay. ;)

Really? Why? He's been pretty damn good so far! Only Schwarz, among the regular starters, had a better Save Percentage, and NOBODY had a better GAA.

quickly reminds of an incident which i witnessed in person in Moscow at the 2001 world junior championships, Canada-Russia, the Canadians trailing in the game pull the goalie, Ilya Kovalchuk steals the puck and has a break away empty net, starts pumping his fist even before he scores, had it not been for the lineup of guys with Kalshnikovs around the arena, i would have gone down to the Russian bench and beat the crap out of him for that.

Is that a fact? I wasn't aware of that. Still, I don't think he's been tested yet. From the goals I've seen him let in, they've been pretty week. He stopped 10 shots against the other night. I don't know how he'll do against Ovechekin, Malkin and the rest.

I watched the game on ESPN2, and the Russians really overwhelmed the U.S with their speed and skill.

When Ovechkin scored the first empty netter of the game, he put his glove to the side of his helmet and looked up to the stands as if to say he couldn't hear the American fans cheering anymore and then when he went to the bench he started nodding at the US fans and then pointing to his name on hs sweater. When Malkin scored he skated by the US bench and strated waving at the US players and coaches while he had a big grin on his face.

The Russians have always been cocky, and I'm sure we'll see more of their antics when they beat Canada tomorrow night.

The Canadians wont be able to contain Ovechkin, Malkin, Liskin, Shirokov and Radulov. There only chance is if Glass can stand on his head.

Prediction - 4-3 Russia

I didn't think many of the six or seven goals he let in were weak. He's done what you'd expect a goalie with a team like that to do - not give the enemy a break. It's hard to goaltend with so few shots, believe it or not. Most keepers like a lot of touches, if not necessarily tough shots.

The main Russian goalie hasn't been better. Both have been adequate so far, without being tested too much.

Yeah, they beat Napoleon and Hitler and all of a sudden they think they can do whatever the hell they want!!!!
And now, back to hockey .........

If a Canadian kid started showboating around the ice like that after a goal, he'd be tarred in the media and probably benched.
The Russians get away with it.

Actually, your memory is wrong. It wasn't Ovechkin who put his hand to his ear and taunted the crowd - it was the guy who scored the third Russian goal in the first (whose name escapes me - was it Shirokov?).

Canada hasn't yet been tested in this tournament.

I doubt those Russian asses will get the chance to showboat against us. We should prevail easily as our defense handles the Russian attack with disdain.

Did he now?
Seems to me not.

If your arguing that the young Russian players of the last decade or so aren't showboaters, I'll point you to a nice article by Igor Larionov that begs to differ.
