so, trying to make time on the way from Jasper to Edmonton on a saturday morning with not a car in site for kilometers on end, smokie catches me at 27 km's over the limit in my entry level hyundai. I provided nothing but my drivers license. Will my insurance company be informed? Will i receive demerit points here in ontario???

thanks

•Drivers convicted of a driving related offence in the State of New York, the State of Michigan or any Canadian province or territory, will have home jurisdictional penalties such as demerit points and/or suspensions applied to their Ontario driver record as if the offence occurred in Ontario.
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/demerit.shtml

And yes, your insurance company can easily access the information since it'll be in the MTO database.

Thanks....that sucks. Hinton Alberta is a little too far to simply return for a court date..maybe they have some sort of private outfit that could represent me!

i got a ticket from US, can the insurance find out easily?
I believe it would depend on which state you were in when you got the ticket, some have reciprocal agreements with Ontario, some don't..

I'd be cautious about ignoring it. In my experience, insurance companies will use any excuse they can to put up your rates. Sure, maybe some have got away with it but I'll bet those are aberrations.

For the amount of angst it might cause you, especially when it goes to insurance rates, you might be better off just paying the hundred or so bucks and be done with it.

Stupid advice. If you pay the ticket, you admit the guilt, it means you are convicted. It makes it even more likely your insurance company will find out and still face increased rate.

I guess, TVA, that you didn't read the OP's post completely. He states that it's an OUT OF PROVINCE ticket. Perhaps some comprehension work might be in order.

Then, by all means, OP is free to fly back to Edmonchuck (one way tix from YYZ to YEG start at $229 plus fees) and fight it in court.

TVA, will you spot whitewaterguy's airfare so he can fight the ticket?

Since you got the ticket in Alberta any demerits associated with it will show up on your Ontario drivers licence and your insurance company will have access to that info.

interestingly enough, there is no spot on the ticket for the drivers license number, so it was never noted, just my name and address as printed on the drivers license. i should get a paralegal out there to show up in court on my behalf...primarily to keep the demerits off my record...not so concerend about the $160.00 fine itself..that not even decent hobbying dollars!

Guys,
Big mistake everyone makes is that they think if they don't get demerit points, it will not affect your insurance rates. A conviction is a conviction and based on that, they will charge you. In terms of the insurance company finding out or not finding out, not all companies will review the abstract on renewal. if they don't you gotta away with it. if they do, then your unlucky.

Deal with it and close it up. Kill it now.

Don't leave any loose ends hanging that might come back and bite you in the ass later.
