"A lawsuit filed on Tuesday alleges that Ottawa fertility doctor Norman Barwin impregnated Davina Dixon with his own sperm through artificial insemination when she and her husband turned to him for help to conceive a child in the late 1980s.
Rebecca was born on June 1, 1990. She has a dark complexion and brown eyes. Daniel and Davina Dixon both have fair skin and blue eyes.
But it was not until February 2016 that Davina grew suspicious of a possible mix-up at the Broadview Fertility Clinic in Ottawa after she saw a post on Facebook that said it was unusual for two parents each with blue eyes to conceive a child with brown eyes, according to the statement of claim filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
The family booked a blood test, which revealed Rebecca has type O-positive and Daniel has type AB. Research says someone with AB blood cannot conceive a child with type O blood.
The family dug a little deeper, and on April 15, 2016, a paternity test concluded that the probability of Daniel’s being the father was 0.0 per cent, according to the statement of claim.
“It was a complete shock,” said Rebecca in an interview Wednesday. “There’s a sense of injustice, there’s a sense of anger on behalf of my parents who do feel violated and betrayed.”
