I think what is the bigger picture is that CFIA , who once were the omnicient gods of all things agricultural are pissed that there has been push back.
On the other hand every one will be out for CFIA's head if bad comes and they were seen as being too lenient.

When the cull order started the CFIA ordered the elimination for the recently ill flock.
Delays in the court process have allowed time for the heath of the flock to improve.

There is no winner here.
But I suspect that despite CFIA looking like the bad guys, I would rather rely on their remit of science.
Versus the megaphone of the farmers' savvy use of social media.

Is there any way to definitively ensure the animals are disease free and not a transmission risk?

Not likely, as to transmission risk.
All birds, in my non biology/science degree opinion, are in some degree vectors as to risk to humans cross over from bird flus and viruses.

I have done quite a bit of design work for government and for profit plaza stakeholders on upgrade jobs at 8 different land border crossings into Ontario.
In over 30 years of doing what I do.

The CFIA reps are almost always just straight forward, lets get business done, folks.
They know what they need, outline it promptly, and dont often change their minds.

I wish more of the other stakeholders sometimes were like them.

Well I think its not possible to expect this in some cases, these people have had the flock for 30 years and its not possible to avoiding becoming attached to animals after so long, especially if you are animal oriented to start with. Its a very sad situation. Another problem I see is that people will start hiding sick animals.

It seems odd they are insisting on the cull. One would think the birds are now resistant to the flu no?
It's standard practice to cull any potential risk. Plus it doesn't sound like they were practising correct procedures handling the livestock.

Their position is our birds are not sick, anymore. But they were going to kill them anyways.

It's a bit of a paradox.

The woman who owns the farm is a super nutter. She raves about God and the ostriches are like her children. Maybe the ostriches could be sent to graze on the Whitehouse lawn where they could bury their heads when Trump is asked about Epstein.

Looks like the Supreme Court struck down the farm's claim and yesterday 300 Ostriches were culled. Kind of sad.
It is, but TBH I don't know the exact details. From what I understand they can still be carriers even though they are immune. I will have to defer to the experts on this one

I would imagine if you have a bunch of ostriches that are not for slaughter you would get attached to them like pets.

Trump is in your head really bad. Before I laughed at the whole "Trump derangement syndrome" but you are convincing me it's a real thing.

You never had any animals in your life? If you did, you would understand why she feels the way she does, but it doesn't sound like you did.
Don't think it's really about the birds. Wondering why they are not covering more of the financial issues this farm has faced well before the avian flu fiasco.

They owe multiple creditors $$$ and basically have not paid . The cull was a nice distraction to raise $$$ that I suspect went to pay legal bills rather than the welfare of the birds.

Then why was she selling them off as ostrich meat just last year? Do you sell your pets to restaurants as food?

Maybe I can't argue that point, but seeing her in tears the way she was, seemed the same to me like someone was losing their child, cat or dog.
She got $50,000 from a billionaire in the U.S. for her legal bills and had support from some big names in Trump's cabinet, RFKJr. and Dr. Oz if I'm not mistaken.
How is it different then a cat or dog if you have had these bird for years?

$100K raised thru crowd funding.

Also there was a post stating that the settlement of the cull had they allowed it initially was to amount to a good chunk of cash settlement. Some creditors took claim to some of this to cover $$$ owed via the courts. The farm didn't go for it. Wonder what their end game was? Raise more $$$ thru donations/crowd funding hoping it would exceed $400K? Even if they saved the birds, it seems they have no funds to actually take care of them. How do they pay creditors? Also there is a claim for part of the property is not theirs anymore but the actual owners are not allowed access.

Isn’t RFK Jr the same guy who dumped a dead bear in Central Park and who chain sawed a dead whale in half after finding it on the beach and then strapped it to the roof of the family van and took it home? That JFK Jr?

smh…Who tf cares about killing ostriches FFS? I saw people on social media hysterically crying, calling the people culling the ostriches fascists, etc. These people are completely unhinged.
