The Lord of the Rings is arguably the most amazing achievement in cinema since its invention. If it doesn't win best picture then there's a serious problem with the Academy. Gladiator won best picture, and Rings is in another league.

Nothing like the LOTR has ever been attempted and successfully achieved, and it deserves the honor.

I think it'll be LOTR:ROTK. I haven't seen Cold Mountain, but I don't think it did as well as expected. The Academy ususally does give out the top awards to films that didn't live up to expectations.

I think LOTR has a good shot. BBking is right, fantasy pictures usually don't win, but Hollywood loves spectacle, and big box office doesn't hurt.

Mystic River is a great movie, but it will be to LOTR this year, like L.A. Confidential was to Titanic.

I think the academy will give Jackson his awards for all three movies this year. They was probably waitin to see how 3rd one turned out before they gave him the nod.

I just saw LOTR again, but on the IMAX screen this time and it was great.

This was a project that had a high chance of not living up to expectations due to the nature of the source (a story that had a devout following that were hopeful but ready to trash it if it wasn't true to the original) and all the hype beforehand. It ended out being a cinematic masterpiece with excellent acting and icredible effects and battle scenes (and the action scenes of movies rarely do much for me).

My undisputed favorite movies had been Godfather I and II. I think these movies rank right up there for me. I've seen a pretty good number of the nominees this year and LOTR was by far the best. Homonger's right, this is the type of spectacle that Hollywood loves. I think Oscar is past worrying about fantasy here as it's already awarded honours to the first two parts.

I think if it were a year of stronger Best Picture contenders, then RotK probably wouldn't get the consideration that it deserved. But, it will win, I believe. And Jackson will win the Best Director Oscar. Kudos all around. :)

LOTR and Jackson took the Golden Globes, so that historically increases their chances for the Oscars. I'd bet that he'll get best director at the very least. As to the tech awards, since all three movies were filmed together and they've already picked up a truck load of hardware, will they continue to award the same makeup artists and chain mail assemblers?

You think that will be a surprise? Again, the GG win increases his odds dramatically, and I think he's earned it with this role.

I'll be disappointed if Sophia takes director. She's still cutting her teeth, although she has a fine future ahead of her. I think the academy will reward Jackson for the accomplishment of putting together essentially a 9 hour movie with such detail and planning. Although the actors didn't get the nod, and I didn't think they should either, the feat of putting such a mammoth project together should be recognized.
