Tonight of course is Oscar night. Just curious if any one has oscar pool going and if you have any underdog picks in the major categories or any thoughts in general about Hollywood's (could be Bollywood's) big night.

I will never watch/give a flying fuck about the oscars again. Sean Penn over Mickey Rourke? If you make that mistake your not a relevant award.

Milk - really? Just can't wait to go to a movie to see two guys kissing - not!!!

As usual movies are picked that are not reflecting what the populace are seeing. Box office s/b the determining factor.

How many qualified actors are in Slumdog whatever...

Kate Winslet is just about the only redeeming factor from last night...:)

I haven't seen "MILK" so I can't comment on Sean's acting in it... I did see The Wrestler, and Mickey did do an outstanding job in this film. (As did Marissa I thought...)

The Oscars is not about who did the best job in a particular film... In many cases, it is a "political" thing... A few years back Sean Penn (in I am Sam) lost to Denzel Washington (in Training Day). Many thought Sean should have won, and Denzel won because he was passed over several times previously...
no different this time.

At the end of the day it just a pant load anyway...

I enjoyed the show.

Even though Heath Leger won, I didn't see him in the memorial part.

As for George Carlin (who I saw in Brampton's Rose Theatre a year ago), excuse my ignorance, but did he ever appear in a movie?

I was hoping for Mickey Rourke to win. Now THAT would've been poetic justice.
Yes George Carlin was in movie's: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Car Wash, and he did voice over work for Cars... there might be more...

Carlin was also in a couple of Kevin Smith Movies (Dogma, Jersey Girl) more recently.

Saw the parts of the show that I wanted on the net this morning, Opening Ceremony and major categories - less than 30 minutes total.

As for Penn, he did put in a better performance than Rourke and I loved Rourke in the Wrestler. Problem is nobody has seen it. Watch Milk, and by the end you can't believe #1 its Sean Penn, #2 its the same actor who played Jimmy Markum in Mystic River. A truly great performance.

If Carlin was not in the list, oddly enough, from everything I've seen of him he probably would have wanted it that way:p .He never had much good to say of hollywoods ego.Kate Winslet is fucking Sam Mendes. That's why she won that and oscars to come.Period.

I TOTALLY agree with you. I saw them both and Penn was amazing. Rourke was too, but the Harvey Milk character had a lot more opportunities to show off acting talent.
