That's the intuitive response. And that's the mindset of most governments. But it's the wrong response and here's why.

Fighting crime and being tough on criminals feels good because it's The Good Guys vs The Bad Guys like all the media we've been trained on since childhood. But think about it. Why spend time, money, and resources tracking down criminals that already committed crimes when you could combat the root cause of crime in the first place? It's cheaper to prevent a crime than to let it happen and then hunt them down after and repair the damage.

Other jurisdictions realized this and discovered it's cheaper to combat the root cause of crime to prevent it happening in the first place. It's cheaper AND it lowers the crime rate more than just putting more money into cops and enforcement and jails and "coming down hard" on criminals.

And the root causes of most crime, according to study after study after study:
Poverty, addiction, and lack of access to mental health support.

Feed the poor. Help people get off drugs. And let people get diagnosed and treated for mental health issues. Do these three things and most crime disappears. It's cheaper than increasing police budgets. It lowers crime more than "coming down hard" on criminals. It's cheaper AND more effective. This isn't some woke bullshit either. It's proven by other jurisdictions. And I want it done here too.
They aren't stealing to eat. These are organized gangs with shopping lists for sale within hours on the internet. I agree. Affirdable housing, healthcare, and decent wages with certainly mitigate things. But there is also now a sub culture of crime that has as much to do with street cred as economics. Hence the footage. And glorified in some media.

CVS closing 900 stores...thought of this article when I read through this discussion.
Looks like more and more stores (and banks) are moving online.

Too bad. I still enjoy the brick and mortar shopping experience. I guess a lot of pharmacy stuff is "cookie cutter". I mean Aspirin 81 is Aspirin 81. Also, a dollar is a dollar for a bank whether it is online or physical.

Mandrill used to tell me that retail thefts in the USA are not a problem. These were all supposedly isolated incidents. Wrong.

He used to say that illegal immigration in the USA wasn't a problem. Now he says it is.

Currently, he says that mass immigration to Canada isn't a problem... guess what he's going to find out in the future?

Reality is a Liberals Kryptonite.

Once the consequences of their Progressive policies materialize, then a real conversation can happen.
