It is just a publicity stunt. OpenAI specifically prompted its LLM to find a way to break isolation, and it did. Malware, Viruses, Trojans break isolation all the time and software/hardware gets patched to remove that vulnerability.

There are 3 types of people WRT AI: anti-AI, pro-AI, neither.

To the anti-AI people, this news will make them more anti-AI. OpenAI had zero chance of changing the minds of anti-AI people, so they do not give a shit what anti-AI people think.

To the pro-AI people, this will make them more pro-AI. If AI is smart enough to break out of isolation, then surely it is smart enough to: cure my BO, find me a hot bitch, trade stocks for me and make me rich, etc...

Suppose you read in the news "Porsche travelling at 400 miles per hour, kills family". If you are anti-Porsche, then you put emphasis on "kills family". If you are pro-Porsche, then all you are thinking about is the 400 miles per hour, and if you put your home in a HELOC will that be enough to buy that model.
