Lots of talk last year about Sweden controversially No lockdown/ Herd immunity approach to handling of COVID 19. Now a year later we have Data and can compare what the lock downs have achieved or not achieved.

Ontario: pop 14.5 mil

502k Covid Cases 8405 deaths(1 per 1725)

Sweden: pop 10.2 mil

1.03 mil cases 14,267 deaths(1 per 714)

If Ontario had followed Sweden No Lockdown approach we would have had over 20,000 dead using Sweden numbers.

If Sweden had followed Ontario approach and achieved similar stats they would have roughly over 5000 deaths.

Add to it, their economy retracted early on in the pandemic because its neighbors did not visit Sweden.

There are a lot of problems comparing countries that are far away from each other and have very different health and support infrastructure. So this is fine for what it is, but you can't get too caught up in it.
That's why Sweden was normally compared to the other Scandanavian/Nordic countries who took different approaches. That gave a slightly more realistic natural experiment.
(They fare badly there as well.)

Sweden was so last year. Belarus is the shining example now, no lockdown, no vaccine, and 0 cases of C19.
LOL. Belarus, lol:

328,000 doses given, 84,500 fully vaccinated:

372,000 cases, 2,671 deaths:

" Citizens began practising self-isolation early on."

"... Another factor is that Belarus has very few care homes... with most elderly citizens living separately.10 This has helped shield its most vulnerable. “In many cases in Belarus, you have already had some isolation of elderly people, particularly in the countryside or in single flats” says Nilsson.

" Nilsson says Belarus also benefited from being a relatively isolated country where the government can easily shut down borders and monitor those passing through. “People tend to go in the other direction,” he says, “Very few people will go to Belarus for holidays or work.”

"... Although the low death numbers are encouraging, some experts fear that many coronavirus related deaths are registered as cases of pneumonia—UN data show a difference of 5605 between April-June 2019 compared with the same period in 2020.11 And the deaths per capita ratio remains one of the highest in Europe. Nilson is cautious, “Until we have the figures for excess deaths, I don’t want to praise Belarus too much.”

Population density in Sweden is 25.4 per square kilometer. In Ontario its 14. I think that is probably the biggest reason for the differential. Even though Sweden didn't formally lockdown like we did, people still social and physical distanced, gatherings of more than 50 were prohibited, high schools and universities were closed. Business hours were reduced and dining establishments operated with reduced capacity.
Deaths from May 17,20-May 17, 21
Sweden 10,284
Ontario 6,581
