A rock is a solid player--plays only quality starting hands--the pragmatist.
A cannon is aggressive raiser--raises with marginal hands and draws--the adrenalin junkie.
A chaser is a person who will call even though the odds pot odds dont justify the call--the optimist/long term loser.
A calling station is a passive player who merely calls--the meek, although if you have top pair, top/good kicker on the flop--being a calling station can maximize your pot.

yeah I make ten times as much as what I started with in about an hour of playing. In order to do that you have to go all in and hope that the river card will help you ;)

Jayman1976 is my handle on ultimatebet.com if anyone is on there!

Actually, my experience is very similar to buckybruce's. I tried my hand at Paradise Poker for the first time today and played for about 1.5 hours. Started with 1000. Currently at 1109. Just play money though. I don't believe play money tables allow players to go all in.

While we're on the subject, I'm definitely enjoying all the poker action that has been on TSN lately (World Series of Poker). It's good to see games OTHER than Hold'em on TV.

Oh yeah, Evelyn Ng and Annie Duke rock!

Actually they repeated that Annie Duke episode last night (or maybe Monday night). She looks like a really cool fun person to hang out with. We all know that she's the baby sister of Howard Lederher but their father is some sort of world famous linguist who is a master at coming up with puns and double-entendres.

Sorry for the off topic rant. Evelyn Ng rocks!

It would appear that the all-in option is only available on real money games. as goleafsgo has commented...

I will try another site tonite...

For an opposing view of Annie Duke--you should search for an article by Daniel Negraneau. For those who arent familiar, Daniel is a Toronto poker player--currently ranked number 1 by Card Player magazine--he also won the best overall player award at this years WSOP. He has played with Annie Duke frequently and remembers how demeaning she was when he met her at a poker room. He has little respect for her poker abilities or her poker ethics. I know she won a few big tournaments this year but in cash games it's another story.

I am trying to learn the Holdem game by playing with real money on the low tables(0.25=0.50) with a betting limit. I find that the play money game is a very different game. I suspect that the higher tables game($5-$10) with no limit will be a different game again, but at least I hope to learn the basics on the low money tables.

Any suggestions and advice?

I watch as much poker as I can on TV and I've gone through a couple of books on the game but I'm still too amateur-ish to play for real money. I've played on pokerparadise and found it easy to get used to. Everybody plays differently when it's just play money but yeah, it's helping me recognize patterns and whatnot.

How have you been doing on pokerparadise, Northred? how would the private tournament work?

I heard from a waitress at casino Niagara that they are going to build a poker room since they have more room now that the new casino opened. Even have tournaments.

I hope they go through with it.

I started playing on there about 9 months ago and started with a $25 deposit. Since then, my bankroll has gotten as high as $5K, and I have not had to make another deposit since then...
That is darn impressive, Northred, I don't think I am ready to play with you. I have played for 10 days, and I am up $7.50.

How fast did you progress from the $0.25 limit to $5 NL tables?

It is good to do some research but you need to play to really learn. "earn as you learn" or so they say.

Just start with a budget that you can afford to lose and treat it as training.

Also, keep in mind that tournament play is quite differnt than limit play. It is hard to muscle people out in limit play, especially at low limit tables. Also, the increasing blinds need to be considered when in tournament play

Advice from a serious poker player

I play $10/$20 6-handed at partypoker. I recommend playing at the pennies level and move your way up gradually. You cannot move up until you have beaten your level. Excuses are:
1. "people are too loose at this level, I must move up." WRONG. Use their looseness to your advantage. Adjust. Be like the wind.
2. "the money is not worth playing for so I play very loose and relaxed. If I move up a level, I will play better." WRONG. The objective is not to make money. You are in training. You need to beat your level before you can move up.

Only at the $5/$10 and above, you can start making real money but you can't move up here unless you paid your dues. Poker is not for everyone.

My 411: I won a net $37K US this year. Last year I won $10K plus a Partypoker cruise worth $9 US. It took me 3 years playing and reading to get to this level. I was the first few hundred players at partypoker in June 2002, and I started at paradise in March 2001.

I find that the problem with playing the $1/$2 tables at PartyPoker and other places, is that there is no real risk to go into a hand. If you only have to pay $1 to see the flop, then people that actually have bad hands will still go in, and end up winning. Over a certain amount of time, you can lose $50 or $100 just like that. There needs to be a risk to go into the hand in the first place.
