Without legal obligation to fulfill a contract, no matter how distasteful, we have anarchy
We don't have anarchy we have bankruptcy protection. The City of Toronto should simply declare bankruptcy, if that is possible.

What is happening is government is trying to cut out the middle class. They are doing a very good job of it in the USA.
That is pure (still steaming) bull shit.
There is no government agenda to cut out any class.

There are world wide economic forces at work that nobody (not even the all powerful government) controls.
Primarily the ability of China to make goods much cheaper than we can in North America.
This has resulted in the loss of manufacturing jobs.

But it is not your government's dirty little secret to screw over any particular group.
It just does not work that way

Why is it that someone (anyone) must be blamed

Its going to continue, so the sooner you accept it and adjust to it the better off you will be.

Not quite right. Governments' always brag about their agenda to eliminate the poverty class. It just never seems to work

Because the government has - be it for the good or bad or indifferent - set the policies in action that have resulted in said downfall of middle class. They are not a neutral bystander.

I see from this thread that a lot of people don't know why they're on strike yet they have an opinion on it.

Maybe I am looking at this from the wrong angle but you look at what the city of toronto has saved this summer in wages . So if they can stretch things out by not negotiating fairly until they feel they have too why wouldnt they. The City has some major projects on hold due to funding restrictions do you not think this is a simple way to come up with some much needed cash ? Lets say the average employee earns 200 a day the city is paying out over 300 with benefits etc per day multiply that times how ever many thousand employees ............
