As anyone taking a look at news sites knows Omar Khadr in the Providency exchange* with the Judge this morning admitted to being an "alien, unprivileged, enemy belligerent, unqualified engage in combat hostilities with coalition forces", to being guilty of "murder in violation of the laws of war," to being a member of al-Qaeda, and to conspiring to carry out terrorist attacks including making and planting roadside bombs.

* U.S. Military Courts routinely carry out much more extensive questioning of a defendant wishing to enter a guilty plea than do civil courts, to make quite sure that they are not doing so under command pressure.

Khadr would be welcome in Yemen..........here's a video produced by the Yemen Ministry of Travel, Tourism and Terrorist Repatriation (the "YMTTTR") extolling the benefits of choosing Yemen (over a Canadian prison cell)

http://www.nato.int/docu/review/2010/Yemen/Yemen_10_reasons_to_worry/EN/index.htm
places like this around the world are why I don't think this war on terrorism can be won militarily. There's an endless supply of recruits since they have such a shitty life. There will always be guys like Bin Laden that will exploit their situation. Its pretty easy to place the blame on the west for their lot in life, It gives them something to channel their anger and bitterness towards.

The part in the video where they talk about tourism in Yemen made me laugh. Not very enticing when you hear reports about tourists being kidnapped and killed.

Khadr, who had long denied having thrown the grenade that killed U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer in 2002, abruptly changed his tune when he withdrew his not-guilty plea and entered a guilty plea instead.

Under the terms of his plea agreement, Khadr will begin serving his sentence in an American prison, but he'll be permitted to apply for a transfer to Canada after the first year.

Under the terms of the repatriation treaty, both the convicting authority and Canada must agree to the transfer. The Americans have included it in their agreement. A Canadian decision has not been released.

Omar Khadr pleads guilty

By Michelle Shephard
National Security Reporter

GUANTANAMO BAY, CUBA—It took less than an hour inside a sombre military courtroom Monday for Canadian Omar Khadr to plead guilty to murdering an American soldier and end a war crimes case that has dragged on for eight years.

The Toronto-born detainee told military judge Army Col. Patrick Parrish that he understood the charges, his confession, and the conditions of a plea agreement.

In addition to pleading guilty to throwing a grenade when he was 15 that fatally wounded Sgt. First Class Christopher Speer, Khadr is convicted of attempted murder, spying, conspiracy and providing material support to terrorism.

Speer’s widow Tabitha sat in the front row tightly clutching her sister’s hand and cried as Parrish mentioned her husband’s name.

When the plea was formally accepted at the end of the 55-minute hearing the only sound in the courtroom was the clang of her bracelets as she briefly pumped her sister’s hand, celebrating the end.

One of her silver bangles was engraved with her husband’s name.

Khadr betrayed little emotion and answered the judge’s questions with a quiet “yes” or “no.”

The burly and bearded 24-year-old wore a dark suit, thin blue tie and sat beside his Canadian lawyer Dennis Edney, hunched over the documents detailing his agreement and statement.

But the 50-paragraph “stipulation of fact” that will outline Khadr’s detailed plea will not be released until Tuesday, when the military jury returns and Khadr’s sentencing hearing begins.

Once Khadr is sentenced, the plea agreement will also be released.

That deal will allow Khadr to apply to Ottawa – with the support of the U.S. administration – for transfer to Canada after serving one year of his sentence here.

Following the hearing Edney said he believes Khadr is innocent and had no choice in the case.

“He had to come to a hellish decision . . . he had to make it on his own to get out of Guantanamo Bay,” he told a group of journalists here.

Guantanamo’s Chief Prosecutor John Murphy spoke next, scoffing at notions of Khadr being a victim.

“Omar Khadr is not a victim. He’s not a child soldier. He’s convicted on his own words.”

Khadr would have faced a maximum sentence of life behind bars had he been convicted at trial. Various sources have said that the plea agreement stipulates an eight-year sentence.

This week a military jury will hear from witnesses that include Speer’s widow and injured American soldier Layne Morris, and recommend a sentence. The seven-member jury will not know the sentencing agreement of the plea deal.

Under the military commission rules, Khadr will receive the lesser sentence.

Morris said he was largely unemotional seeing Khadr for the first time in court Monday.

Although he was sorry there would not be a trial, hearing Khadr’s plea Monday was a good “trade off.”

“There is a definite amount of satisfaction to hear that man stand up and admit to everything.”

I have to think that you are the last person to actually believe that. Even fuji has stopped stamping his feet and holding his breath while starting yet another thread about it.

I'm pretty sure they're from an unrelated story.
huh!?? that's even worse then, maybe he's responsible for more deaths.

this 'kid' is a POS , walking around like that with those body parts as trophies. I don't feel any sympathy whatsoever for him. its pretty apparent he's chosen his path, he can't now claim he's a child because he got caught.

Don't kid yourself, there's lots of Canadians who still weep for Omar Khadr and his Terrorist family. (I'm not one of them. As far as I'm concerned, the Gov't should let him stay in the USA. The Americans wanted him so bad, now he's their problem.)

Most Americans wouldn't mind keeping him to the end of his sentence then he could either be dropped off at the end of the Rainbow Bridge or dropped off outside Khost.

the problem with this plea deal is now we will not have a trial and all the facts will not come out. based on the comments from his legal counsel he has pled guilty because he had no faith in the trial system and he thinks this is only chance for freedom. (for some reason i am thinking about the women who pled guilty to killing their kids based on the evidence from the disgraced coroner.)

We all heard from the LLL's that Khadr has 86 million rights but, believe it or not, the great country of Canada also has a few rights and one of those rights is to accede or not to accede to any repatriation request. Canada needs LESS not more terrorists.
