Although it would have been most advantageous for the COC to have this new Toronto landmark open prior to the Athens Olympics, it is here now and I had the pleasure of visitng yesterday. Its gestation seemed to mirror the Athens Olympics with cost over-runs and construction delays (still needs some finishing details), but the venue is an excellent addition to the Dundas Square area (located at the corner of Dundas and Victoria).
The interactive floors allow you to test your physical abilities on simulations of events from both the winter and summer games and relive your favourite Olympic memories...I particularly enjoyed the winter sports floor. I'm sure that their target market is the family tourist groups but overall, it has appeal for the older crowd still clinging to their inner child or reliving the glory years.
What impressed me most was the rooftop restaurant (Podium Restaurant and Bar) that overlooks Dundas and Yonge, an intersection that is quickly being transformed into Toronto's Time Square. Food and service were great and on a surprisingly nice fall evening, we had most of the patio to ourselves.
The $18 adult entry seems a little pricey while they are still finishing off some of the exterior and interior construction, but worth it when you compare it to the cost of some of the other downtown attractions, like the door fee for the Upper Brass. The building design helps shape the Square which has seems to have been under construction forever now and even incorporates the Victoria Street Streetcar tracks into the ground floor facade.
It's a fun time if you're looking for a touristy thing to do and an excellent place to relax with food and drink now that the summer weather is here.
