This was suppose to be our Olympics, but once again a couple of our "finest" are coming up small during a February every 4 years.
Jeremy Wotherspoon-he is the poster boy for choking when a medal is there for the taking

Worse still the Americans come through at the right time-the drugs & masking agents flowing through their bodies must be working perfectly. Case in point-Joey Cheek

In the corner
We build up totally unrealistic medal expectations and then complain when the competitors choke!!

The poster girl would be figure skater Josee Chouinard, she always seemed to choke at the big competitions like the Olympics, but she's really cute!

Yes, there have been many before Jeremy. Brian Orser, Kurt Browning, Jean-Luc Brassard, Elvis Stojko (although he was cheated to some degree), couple different curling teams, Beckie Scott, etc ... What can you do? Cheer for the Maple Leaf I guess and cross your fingers.

At least their were some of the super hyped Americans that have choked on some i.e. Bode Miller, Apollo Ono

Short track speed skating is the bomb. Just wild!!!

Josee Chouinard was the queen of choke, but what a hottie she was,i remember working at MLG(god bless that building) & all those stars on ice events where they did the tv taping 4 the cbc broadcast shown moths later & the running joke was how many takes would it take 4 Josee 2 get it right.

can we please stop sending athletes to finish 32nd and 57th, I know its all wonderful and glorious that these athletes get to represent their country but really this is suppose to be the best of the best, we should pick 10 sports and focus on those and give funding to them only.

what canadians forget at the olympics is the fact that these atheletes
have over the course of 4+ years been training, and
most likely recieved little to no support from canada at all. Why should they perform any better than they do when all they have incurred is financial
hardship just to get to the olympics. Most of us do not realize the amount of money these atheletes forgo in order to get to where they are. It saddens me when I hear that approx. 90 percent of canadian atheletes have to get financial aid just to buy the airline ticket to get to the games. When are Canadians going to step up and pave the way for these atheletes to be able to stop worrying about bus fair and start worrying about winning us Gold!

On a related Olympic note, I saw today, for the first time, a Winter Olympic athlete from the Southern Hemisphere. A female snowboarder from Australia. I had been wondering, why is it only Northern Hemisphere athletes seem to do well at the Winter Games? Surely, there is snow and ice in parts of Australia, South America, and Africa. Yes, it was a slow day for my brain.

And on another Olympic note, is it fruity for me to admit I like figure skating? I like watching the women, of course, those short little skirts, those tight little asses. Oh baby. I think Sasha Cohen is hot. You rarely see an ugly female figure skater. I mean, Irina Slutskaya is no beauty, but you have to like a girl with "Slut" in her name.

I used to like to watch figure skating also, but we are being so bombarded with it in Canada, that I can't take it anymore. There literally is not an evening where there is no figure skating on TV.

I have to correct you on one point. There is no snow anywhere in Africa, except on the high altitudes of Mount Kilimanjaro etc.

Hockey guys hockey..that is all that matters. As long as we bring home the gold in hockey mens and women, I can bare the rest of the atheletes losing face.

BTW, curling is cool too.

I am sorry but on a list of priorities schools and hospitals being first, sports is near the bottom for me when it comes to government funding, the way that the Americans do it is best, almost complete total corporate funding let these athletes if they are so great, go and ask for money from companies, it would certainly curtail the 49th place guy thinking oh i am gonna go to the Olympics, WHY!!! just to finish maybe 46th. of course good luck getting funding in Canada from companies, compared to their US counterparts they dont seem as eager to shell out.

on a side note can we please throw womens hockey out of the games till there is actually some competition for the US and Canada, watching 16-0 games is not entertaining

I think we should hold back a bit on our judgement of how Canada is doing. After all, the games are only three or four days old. Canada usually gets the brunt of its medals around the mid-part when short track skating is held.

Although I agree that sports plays a very minor role when we talk about funding, I think that Canadian corporations should step up with our atheletes
just as the Americans do. Canadians always want our atheletes to bring back the bacon but we also want them to purchase the frying pan and the stove
to cook the bacon. Placing 49th at the olympics sure is sad for those of us watching the games, but when you realize these atheletes have had to fund their whole development, you might realize that this is a massive achievement. Forget what the media tells you, the reality is that Canadian corporations only support canadian atheletes when they win a medal or are world top 3 ranked. It pisses me off when I see these corporations telling you in tv ads that they are proud sponsors of the canadian atheletes when in actual fact they have spent more money on the ads then their entire sponsorship campaign.

I did not know that. But at the risk of being argumentative, my point was actually correct. I wondered if there was snow and ice in Africa, and clearly there is. Now, there might not be enough snow and ice in Africa to cultivate the development of Winter Olympic athletes, but there is snow and ice in Africa.

But whatever. I am reminded of the Egyptian slalom skiier from a few years ago, especially since I now know there is no snow in Egypt. This guy was an American, but had Egyptian citizenship, so somehow he finagled his way into the Olympics since I guess Egypt had no one else to send. This guy was a recreational skiier and could barely get down the course, but he got to say he was in the Olympics.

I thought the same thing when watching previews, you'd think 4 years later we would have found someone else to pin our hopes on.

Agreed. Our expectations are too high, without the necessary support being available to them. Canada-USA comparisons in non-pro sports events don't take that into consideration.

Did anyone watch the Cross Country team sprints... Canada won a silver..

Becky Scott and Sarah Renner

But the great thing was Sarah broke a ski-pole on her last leg and was falling away from the lead pack. Someone passed her a new pole and she was able to stay close so Becky could compete for the gold.

The person who passed her a new pole was a coach from the Norway team, who were also competing in this race.

This was a pure olympic moment... kudoes to the Norwegian team showing sportsmanship at it's best.... :)

Our Olympic Team

We should have sent our team at least a week or two early. Because of altitude differences they are lacking air, and can get sick really easy. I was at the 2002 olympics for the entire time and it was hard on all people.
