Yep... My 4 year old Canon 6MP PowerShot is small, has a nice big LCD display that covers the whole back of the camera and all sorts of other features. However as far as picture quality goes, it sucks compared to my 10 year old 4MP Nikon.

I now have a Pen 4/3rds and it has a way better sensor than was in my old Canon G9.
The problem is that the sensor advantage only comes into play if you actually have your camera with you....ergo the old saying " the best picture is the one you never got to take because you did not have your camera."
I used to carry my G9 all over as it fit in my briefcase or the pocket of my wind breaker. It had all the controls of a DSLR without the bulkiness. It took RAW. My Pen sits at home 99% of the time. I do have my 8 meg cell phone but I sure do miss my G9, even with its smaller sensor.
If I were to do it all over again I would go back to my G9 ...now the G12

Its difficult to take a lousy picture with this Powershot.
This camera also comes with a tilt-and-swivel view finder. Great for taking eye level pictures of pets or being able to take pictures over tall heads eg a parade.

A friend has the previous generation of this model. I'm not impressed with the quality of the indoor pics.
I'm now looking at the Nikon S6300 Coolpix. It is compact size. 10x optical zoom. Shoots 1080p video.
As pointed out above, it depends what you want to do with it. I still occasionally use my Canon G2.
Four megapixels. Very sturdy. Mobile LCD screen. Certainly OK for web stuff and made nice 8x10s when I first go it. You can pick one up for about $50 these days.

That's true, depending upon the type of pictures you want to take and if you don't mind being a couple years behind the times you can get some amazing deals.As pointed out above, it depends what you want to do with it. I still occasionally use my Canon G2.

it all depends on your needs. if you don't need much, those old junkers are fine. if you want to take pictures at night on the street without flash, they're no good. nothing wrong with keeping them and using them, say, at the beach so if they get wrecked, it doesn't matter. but we all must admit that every year the digital cameras are getting better. a stop high iso. better af. ergonomics...those things.
