Had a request come at me on the weekend. Where the best oysters/oyster bar in TO? The last one I was at was Big Daddy's on King a long time ago, but maybe there someplace better. Having spent time in N'Orlean;'s, I'm marked for life, but here's hoping.

On a related note... does it still hold that you should not eat oysters in months with the letter "R" (or is it the other way around)?

It's the other way around.

From Wikipedia: It was once assumed that oysters were only safe to eat in months with the letter ‘r’ in their English and French names. This is a myth whose basis in truth is that in the northern hemisphere oysters are much more likely to spoil in May, June, July, and August.

Great. But, does it still hold true? With today's shipping methods it would seem to be less of an issue.

Myth. a traditional or legendary story, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, esp. one that is concerned with some phenomenon of nature.

Well, far be it from me to quesiton an authoritative source like Wikipedia! Checking the reference to the section that you cited, I found the following:

"Yes. Fresh oysters properly refrigerated are wholesome and nutritious throughout the year. They spoil rapidly at high temperatures, however. The belief that oysters were unsafe to eat in May through August arose in earlier days when refrigeration was less prevalent than it is today."

This seems to give some credence to the notion that eating oysters during summer months may have posed a health risk.

And your point is ?

From what you quoted, I can deduce that in the present, oysters can be enjoyed all year round, but in the past, not so much.

I enjoy Starfish at 120 Adelaide St east. It reminds me of the original Rodney's. I am not so impressed with the Rodney's oyster bar since it relocated to a larger venue at King St West and Spadina. It feels like a Red Lobster to me now and the service is not as consistent.

Oyster Boy on Queen Street West (at Strachan) is another good choice. Though it is small and the seating is limited.

And I adore a man who eats oysters as he is more likely to enthusiastically DATY.

Sigh ...

Syn
Well Syn, I don't indulge much in oysters, but I can assure you I'm a first class "licker" ;-)

there are exceptions to every rule. though some of my wide sweeping generalizations such as 'oyster eating men = *****DATY enthusiasts' have served me well over the years.

Oysters as food was given to the world by Ancient Rome. They even conquered Britain to control the oyster market, the richest beds were located in the English Channel. The months ending in "ber" are spawning months; wild oysters are not harvested during that time.

As for the best oyster bar in Toronto - Zee Grill (formerly Phoebe's)

Oysters still tend to be more watery and less firm in the non-"R" months (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere).
