So I order an iPhone 5 upgrade from Rogers couple weeks ago.
I get the call today to come pick it up.
At the counter, surprise, there's now an issue with my account. Apparently they cannot honour my existing contract, I now need to look at a 50% increase for my data plan.
Am upgrading from a current Rogers iPhone 3 and there was no notice of any impending data plan change at the time they accepted my order, other than a new 2 year term.
I tell them I'm not paying any more money to them, why are they wasting my time by not alerting me about this sooner?
They say ya, the website is not clear on that. Then they phone up some gal in "retention", I speak to her and she says the same thing but offers up a whole $5 discount off the new rate lol.
I already had the phone in hand, but I say no thanks, Rogers is not getting another dime from me, and place it back on the counter and say forget it.
I was pissed but didn't get too outwardly mad or rude as I don't think the poor Indian kids working there would understand anyways. Got some strange looks as I turned and walked out.
Needless to say upon getting home it was time to shop around. Got a better quote from Bell on all the same bundled services, plus cheaper price on the phone, as a new customer, and 6 month intro discount too.

Thinking about it. I'm sure they are all similar in service and occassional frustrations, but any particular reason to not go to Bell?

Go with Telus of the Big3. Next to Videotron, they have the highest customer satisfaction ratings.

I got pissed with Cogeco cable and switched TV and Internet to Bell. Wish I hadn't.

What's the monthly fee after the 6 month period? That's what you should be looking at.

It's unfortunate that Verizon bailed on it's Canadian venture. Although, I suspect they'll make there way north in time. And relinquish the big 3's strangle hold on Canadians. They've gauged us for years. Not to mention there horrible customer service we are all so accustom too. This monopoly is the only reason why these companies are in business today, period.

Same, but with better results. And my cell phone plan is ok with Bell. I can't stand the big three, and their monopoly over our telecommunications, but I just find Bell least annoying. Still sick of bullshit protectionism we have right now.

And I wish to have wireless/TV/internet all from the same provider.

they are all crooks. I finally cancelled my land line with Bell after some 30 fucking years. Only when I placed my cancellation that they tried to give me a deep discount to keep my business. I told them why they didn't make me this offer 5 years ago when I called them for a price match from Rogers. Bell can go fuck themselves, although I still have my cell phone plan with them.

If you with Bell, keep an eye on your bill statements. In the past, they were notorious for billing you the wrong quoted price. They need to get their promotion and billing departments to properly connect.

I'm sure they are all similar in service and occassional frustrations, but any particular reason to not go to Bell?

Rogers is horrible, so is Air Canada, how come so many Canadian companies have atrocious customer service who don't give a flying fridge magnet about their customers?

+1, I hate all of them more or less equally

I got rid of my land line with Bell & replaced it with a Magic Jack. No regrets at all!

They are all the same. Bell will tell you how great they are, and offer you discounts for switching over, but once you are
their customer, they will give it to as well. This is why many wanted Verizon to come to Canada.
Bell and Rogers know that no matter what they do, they will have a large share of the marketplace.

I suppose you make an choice and then take a stand.

I don't:

- Eat at McDonald's

- Drink Tim Horton's (fake) coffee

- Frequent 'Big Chain' Restaurants

- Shop at Walmart

- Give Rogers $ in any way, shape or form.

My phone is with Bell and I wrote it into my work contract that they pay for it. No need for a land line any more in this day and age.

If there is a particular business venture you wish to not partake in, make that choice and commit to it.

I'd consider leaving Rogers... I currently have two cells and a data plan and it cost me about $150 per month. I'm seriously thinking of going with a pay as you go phone.. I only use it for calls and text...and a cheapie vanilla phone works fine... My contract ends in January 2014

I use the data plan with my ipad and will probably continue with that.

I'm not enthusiastic about Bell however..after many years with their ExpressVU poor customer service, I'm not enthusiastic about going back to them.

I currently get a pretty fast internet service from my cable supplier - Cogeco. No land line, but they keep trying to sell me one.

Internet, land line and cell (7/11) are costing me now less then $100 month.
It can be done.

My phone is paid for by my job. I have yet to witness accounting complaining about bell so far so I guess they're good. And every 2 years I get upgraded and I have heard there was no upcharge so every co-worker is happy to get new phones..but the young ones are pretty much upgrading after a new phone comes out. My wife on the other hand is with rogers right now and she wanted to change this holidays when her contract is up. Now is the time to shop and give the big Fuck you to rogers...but in the end...they really don't give a shit.

I've been very pissed at Rogers in the past, but managed to negotiate my cell cost down to $63 a month for cross-Canada unlimited phone & text plus 2 Gig data, no contract period. I had one of the original iPhone 6-gig deals, but rarely use even half a gig per month.

Still using a 5-year-old 3Gs and will continue to as long as it keeps functioning well. When I do find battery life failing too quick, or drop it in the toilet, or whatever else sounds the death knell for the aging hardware, there is no fucking way I will buy a new phone from Rogers (or Bell or anyone else) on a contract plan. I'll go straight to the Apple store, pay cash for a new phone and keep my options open with respect to the carrier.

Tying your phone purchase to a service plan is a rip-off. Sure the hardware is "free" when you sign up for the plan, but your cost is amortized over the life of the plan. Which means you're paying an extra $20 a month, say, for that piece of hardware. But when your contract period ends and you have no further fiscal obligation relating to that hardware, your contract doesn't drop by $20 a month; it stays at the same price.

So best advice: Buy the hardware outright and shop for your best deal on cell service, bearing in mind that every one of those "big guys" (Rogers, Bell, Telus, etc) are just itching for anal sex.

So be careful when you bend over to pick up the soap.
