Interesting video.

I had no idea of the structure of Leafs ownership and how Ballard ended up owning them.

I wonder how his life would have been had his first wife not passed. He turned quite bitter after that.

Another surprise was I had no idea he lived in the Gardens. That comes across as lonely.

The story talked about the potential of the Leafs back then, however they never struck me as the next Montreal or Islanders type team. They had some good players, but not a strong supporting team around those core players.

That's because Ballard won't spend the $$$ on getting key players to make them Cup Contenders. Even though making deep playoff runs is more profitable for the owner.

Yet they were the highest valued NHL franchise during that period.

And when he took over the Ti-Cats, they became and were a strong franchise under his watch. Kind of odd to own the Ti-Cats and the Leafs, then to have one team become a winner and the other a loser.

Another strange side to his story is the millions he gave to charities.

Per a quote from a reader off of the CBC website:

"As part owner and majority owner over 29 years Ballard won 3 Stanley cups, over the last 33 years since his death the leafs have won zip, nada, zilch, zero, none."

Ran across this video of the Leafs back in the worst of the Ballard days.

They interviewed a number of the sports writers from the local Toronto papers. Hard to imagine that those reporters were our main source of information back then. I remember reading columns from all of them.
