Obama's tax plan: 'Fair share' vs. 'class warfare'?

By MASSIMO CALABRESI | Time.com – 2 hrs 19 mins ago

President Obama's senior staff laid out his proposal to control the federal deficit while creating jobs Sunday night. The plan claims to cut more than 4 trillion over the next decade, largely from a $1.5 trillion increase in taxes targeting the wealthy. The rhetorical touchstone, referred to repeatedly by the staff in their background briefing was the phrase "fair share," which they say is what the rich should pay by having their tax rate the same or higher than middle income Americans.

Iraq and Afghanistan were fought by a volunteer army with tax cuts that succeeded in increasing the gap between rich and poor. Their must be a reason for the under classes to believe their needs are not being ignored for a society to continue to function. All political constructs are a house of cards that rely on the stability of the base.

Wasn't the battle cry of the revolution something about "taxation without representation"? Now, the poor and middleclass taxpayers are still stuck in the same situation, while the elite get to enjoy representation without taxation.

one might have to read the plan before they can give intelligent input regarding it.

Heaven forbid...an informed opinion?
Worse than that I would hope for an unbiased one.

Contrary to what people think I am a middle class slob who just does not believe we need to support the poor.............

What we need is jobs and not tax paid ones but rather jobs that cost the taxpayers nothing and contribute to the economy.

Call me mad, call me insane but I figure unless you want to live off table scraps I would rather see an economy where you can do well.

Simple cynical campaign tactics, nothing more, all rehashed ideas from previous budgets that Congress has ignored.

You mean like the Reagan guy who raised taxes? Right?
Wrong, Reagan both cut and increased taxes, he did it across the board (rates and payroll taxes) and greatly simplified the tax code... what you're seeing from the current POTUS is simply cynical class warfare....

The debt grew under Reagan and so did defense spending. I'm reasonably sure not even he would have cut taxes while fighting two wars. Unfortunately the projection of US power is increasingly expensive and someone must pay. A credit bubble as identified by Ken Rogoff cannot be sustained and the piper must be paid. Since the middle class is gutted and the lower class is unemployed there are few other options but to revert to more equable levels of taxation on the wealthy.

First thing there is a lot of foolish comparison of Capital Gaines Rates (which have already been taxed once under the Corporate Tax) and the Income Tax Rates.

Second, with a weak economy is it wise to be saying to the very group that creates jobs, hey lets tax the Hell out of you, oh and by the way won't you please invest some more and hire more people. (Have you ever heard of a person on Welfare hiring people?)

Third, seemingly this is a sign that the President is looking at his poll numbers and is giving up on unenrolled voters (independents) and concentrating on attempting to shore up his hard core base.

Don't confuse them with facts, they're liberals and have an aversion to math....

"Class warfare", sound bites from Faux News no doubt.
But the majority of polls across the country show that the MAJORITY of Americans are for increasing taxes on the very wealthy.
So it shouldn't hurt you, what's your concern?

Thank Bush for the economy and in turn the jobs numbers.
How many jobs went overseas?
Even OTB's beloved religious cult Mac has to reach by putting "Designed in America" on their products, not "Made in..."
Which companies are creating jobs or have over the past 10 years?
You claim they are, so who are they?

Bill Clinton's Straight Talk on Lagging U.S. Economy

Bubba says it all here, just like I've been saying!

Clinton's harsh words on American dream

The former president says the iconic notion has been "under assault" for the last 30 years.

The current president has delivered lower tax rates for individuals than Reagan. Was Reagan a class warrior?

Clinton's rates were higher and produced a booming economy.

You have a cute McCarthite talking point...but the facts don't come close.
