Planning to go in May/June. Lots of hotels there of course, but could anyone recommend one? I've stayed in LI and NJ before, but want to stay in Manattan this time. Thinking $150 a night and this is a non SP visit!
Thanks

$150 will not get you much. check travelzoo.ca. they have some good specials. priceline isn't bad either since you get to bid your own price but you are looking at 2 1/2 to 3 star hotels.

good luck

I stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania a long time ago, and was told it was the best low cost hotel in Manhatten.

It wasn't amazing or anything, but surprisingly large, and fairly well kept.

+1 for the Hotel Penn, and what a great phone number they have. My understanding is it's the oldest continuously assigned phone number in the world. Rate can get down to $150 territory if your stay is long enough.

It is a 2 star hotel basically, about as nice as 2 stars get in New York but do expect the rooms to be run down. The hotel is very old and while they've renovated the lobby, the rooms show it. If you don't want run down in New York you're going to have to up your rate to at least $200/night if not more.

I was there last Sept. and stayed at the Holiday Inn in Long Island City (Queens). I realize you said you want to stay in Manhattan but with your budget, LIC is a good alternative. The hotel is a 2 min. walk to the subway and 2 stops to Lexington Ave. / 59 St. You get the convenience of Manhattan without the cost. The hotel is new and clean with big rooms. A comparable hotel in Manhattan would easily be double the cost. The area looks a little sketchy (check it out on Google street view) but I didn't have any problems even coming back to the hotel at the wee hours of the morning. I booked through Priceline.

Keep in mind that if you stay in Manhattan you are looking at $30+/day for parking with the possibility of no in/out privileges. The Holiday Inn had cheaper parking and also plenty of street parking when I was there.

And no, I don’t work for or own shares of Holiday Inn.

When I was living in Manhattan, the Milford Plaza was the cheapest/ best value hotel and a good location on the west side (midtown 8 Ave). According to the link below - a room can be had for $127/ night. I heard the problem was the booking.

Don't take a car - there is no place in Manhattan you can't reach easily on the subway. The cost of parking & gas, I'm guessing you could fly down on a special fare and break even. It is off season - so you may find some good package deals as well.
