It's been said that the new ballparks for the Yankees and Mets were built with public money. Is there any truth to this?

Considering the crippling financial burden that taxpayers are being forced to bear by government, isn't it about time that owners built their own parks?

There is a theory (probably flawed) that a ballpark attracts 50MM tourists every year and they spend $800MM in the local economy. Just like that opera house they built in Toronto with public money. I don't know anybody who goes there (guess I don''t hang out with a cultured crowd).

They certainly generate money for the local economy, and probably quite a bit.

But its still a game of I chicken I hate losing, because the owners are still making money... yes the city benefits indirectly but that is like any business... why should sport teams be subsidized more so that owners can make MORE money.

I'm not sure there was that much public funding in the NYC ballparks... I thought the Yanks paid for most of their stadium....

Well, the deal is made between the owners and the Gov't bozos and they both end out making money. As far as the people in control are concerned, it's a win/win situation.

I'm not saying it's right but it's not hard to see why it happens so often.

Don't forget the BIG OWE in Montreal that we are STILL paying for 33 years later and with no tenant EXPO'S GONE Als gone to a smaller stadium.
