I am a total neophyte when it comes to this and I am looking to replace my PC I have a HP media pavillion NTFS file system, 192 GB free space, 224 GB Total size.....just to be clear I have no idea what ANY of that means but I have had it about five years I also use a wireless I-touch

I am looking to get a laptop that I can use anywhere in the house and can print to my HP Photosmart 25275 printer ...I want to do this aas economically as possible ...........suggestions PLEASE I hope this is enough info but if there is anything else i will answer as promply as I can

Thanks in advance

If after 5 yrs you still have all that free space it looks like you don't download much.

If this is the case, any dual core laptop around $500 will do and will out perform that 5 yr old single core PC and will come with either a 250GB or 320GB drive.

Any of the cheap entry level laptops you get would probably be more than enough for your computing needs. You should be able to pick up a cheap laptop from BestBuy/Future Shop for $5-700.

As far as reliability, I use a Toshiba at home, an HP and IBM at work and have not had any major issues. The harddrive on the IBM crashed about a year after I got it and it fixed fairly quickly as these parts are fairly common. I don't think you can go wrong with a cheap laptop as the worst case scenario is you go buy another cheap (but new) laptop if anything breaks on the first one.

I got a Gateway Netbook 2gig / 250gigHD at one of the Pacific mall shops (netbooks.ca????) If I had waited 2 weeks Computer Canada had the same one same price but it came with a case a mouse and an external DVD burner...but shit happens anyway and I don't let congnitive dissonance get me down too much.

It is a great little PC, weighs nothing and we linked it to our printer wirelessly via our desktop upstairs. The desktop has to be on to print. Note that the netbook has no jack at all to plug a printer into so you either do it wirelessly thru your home network or else use a USB drive to move yoru print jobs.

That sounds a little contradictory. If the netbook has a USB drive then it has a USB port and that's where most printers connect now.

you are correct...one day I will have to buy one....I use an ancient HP Laserjet4 that I borrowed from work 2 careers and about 9 years ago. It was ancient at that time and it just keeps on going and going like an everyready bunny. It has the old pin connector that I only have on my desktop.

One more point about laptops...make sure that you get a 6 cell battery. The notebook shop that i bought from at Pacific Mall had a sign on the Gateway that said 6 cell but inside the box was a 3 cell. I argued and they reluctantly gave me a 6 cell. I was there last night and they dropped the price to reflect the 3 cells...now $369.

I bought a Samsung thin external DVD burner, USB powered, and my initial thought is that it's really a used unit. The Trudirect install cd was not recognized. I huffed on it and wiped it down and then it worked. This makes me think that it really was used.

I am going back to Computer Canada tonight to exchange it but seeing that it is the Pacific Mall I am not confident that all of their stock was at one point falling off the back of a truck somewhere.

any laptop will do

for your purpose though, it sounds like you need a wireless print server
