What do you feel is a noble profession, a job that is respected by most peopleand that you have admiration for?:

I might be bias but I think FIREFIGHTERS rank tops in my book.My 2 sons are FF.

Like people said during 911people ran OUT of the Towers, doxens of FF ran IN!!

I also include Teachers in this list as well. Seperate the Pension-time off issue for a moment and think about it for a minute.Would YOU want to be a teacher these days with all the violence guns etc in the schools.:)

The garbage man. I have HUGE fucking respect for that guy.

Freeze your fucking nuts off in the winter. Maggots and the stink of rot in the summer.

The garbage man deserves respect BIG TIME!

Tough question.
I think any profession can be a noble one for the most part as long as the following can apply to it.
1 - Provide a service to others and or the community.
2 - Can excel without causing the downfall of others.
3 - Has a code which embraces HONESTY, LOYALTY, FAIRNESS, and GOOD MANNERS.
4 - Inspires others to follow the same career path.

Just my thoughts.
I guess it's all about what my grandfather & father drilled into me as a young man. Do an honest day's work for an honest day's pay and take pride in your work.

I never consider firefighters heros, the saying 'they run into burning buildings when others are running out' is hogwash. It's their job and they knew the risks when they signed up, overall it's a pretty cushy job.

For me it's soldiers, these guys are the only real heros, leave their families for months and don't know ir their gonna return, even though they voluntarily signed up, the pay is little and the risks are huge. FF's is no different than any other profession IMO.

I also echo what Papasmurf said, when you're paid to do something, that's just part of your job.

I respect anyone who has a job and contributes, whether they're a Walmart greeter or a Doctor.

There's an answer!

But for trades and professions, my hat's off to anyone who does what I need done, but wouldn't do myself; so garbagemen, plumbers (very fond of calling themselves the Nobel Trade, they are) socialworkers and cops (some cops, sometimes), but above all nurses (doctors are just overpaid mechanics, nurses care).

And y'know, when I realized I wrote nurses, because their job is care and I wouldn't do it, I realized there are some SPs, dancers, and MPAs I'd put on that level too.

So I think you're right Doc. Noble people.

I disagree with the Doctor comment, these guys/gals work long hours and don't have time to do what the nurses do, they can't be too soft, have to tell it like it is. Doctors are the ones with all the pressure.

Any Doc I've ever seen has treated me as well as could be expected.

I feel the same way about firefighters, police officers and members of the armed forces. All of these jobs have a risk associated with them and they know the risk going in. When they do something that the general public feels is "heroic", the reality is that they are just doing their job.

There is no real heroic profession because you know what the risk are going in. There may be times when a heroic deed is done but since 9/11 I think people have a skewed view of what a hero is.

I disagree completely!

YES, they knew the risk when they signed on. But they still "choose" to lay their life on the line everytime they go to work. How many of us do that?

If you think the $60K-$80K per year they earn compensates them for the risk they take, then how about considering your own salary?

We have the (legal) right to refuse work that is "dangerous". How dangerous could your job be compared to these individuals? No matter how "dangerous" your job is, do you face the (very real) threat of being shot EVERY day you go to work? Of being trapped in a burning building EVERY day you go to work? Of being blown up by an IED EVERY day you go to work? When you are 10 minutes late getting home, does your spouse (justifiably) wonder if you are dead or alive?

I don't think so!

Of course there are assholes in EVERY profession. However, this does NOT diminish the risks these individuals take EVERY DAY, by "just doing their job"!

For example, Larry_Fyne, I wager that YOU are an asshole; how much risk do you, or your co-workers, take every day?

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a law enforement officer, a fire fighter, or a member of the Armed Services. But I DO respect the job they do!

Your logic is flawed... if FFs aren't heros because "they knew the risks when they signed up" then neither are soldiers because they know when they signed up that they were going to have to leave their families for months with the chance they won't come home.

(Note: I am not denigrating the contributions of either profession, just working with the original post)

As has been said, I don't think there are noble jobs, just noble people.

Every profession is important. Without janitors, our schools and buildings would be a total mess, and nobody would be able to work. Every profession exists because there is a need for it by our society. One cannot say that one job is more noble than the other.

Ok, ok, I'll say it and get slagged

Lawyers have a noble profession. Especially the criminal defense lawyers (the best of the lot). Why? Because they stand up and fight tooth and nail within the law (don't forget every profession has it's bad apples) for the most hated, friendless and despised amongst us in the face of the full power and might of the state bearing down with all its ferocity. They protect all of our physical persons against the most dangerous force in the human realm, the government.

Ok, I'll run and hide now because as we all know, every accused person is guilty beyond a doubt because the newpaper said so and should be killed as soon as possible without trial, without second thought or further evidence.

The noblest profession?

If you're going to rate nobility on amount of danger faced, day to day, then you'd have to say Fishermen. That's the most dangerous job in Canada. Followed by Roofers, Powerlinemen, Miners, Farmworkers, Steelworkers and so on. Police and Firefighters are only slightly dangerous occupations, statistically.

One measure of nobility of profession, as distinct from nobility of the individual people in the profession, would be to look at each profession from the standpoint of number of lives saved, and total sum of human happiness attributable to that profession. The noblest profession by that measure, is Municipal Sewage Treatment Engineer. No other profession, ever, has saved more lives, nor increased healthy life expectancy more. Not doctors and nurses. Not anyone.

Teachers

Teachers professors and instructors take many roles and none of the above listed could exist without some teaching it or someone instructing people how to perform their profession or trade.
