No wonder Windows 7 is the best Windows yet...

the hobby needs more capitalism
MS was inspired by the best OS ever when developing it -- Mac OS X. =)

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ts_windows_7_design_inspired_by_mac_os_x.html

Simon Aldous, partner group manager with Microsoft, told PCR that the graphical style of Windows 7 -- which he calls "Vista on steroids" -- was inspired by the look of Apple's Mac OS X. The new Windows operating system launched in October.

"One of the things that people say an awful lot about the Apple Mac is that the OS is fantastic, that it's very graphical and easy to use," Aldous said. "What we’ve tried to do with Windows 7 -- whether it's traditional format or in a touch format -- is create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics. We've significantly improved the graphical user interface, but it's built on that very stable core Vista technology, which is far more stable than the current Mac platform, for instance."

And both M$ and Mac use/copy stuff from Linux all the time.
Been happening for years.
First time I played on a Mac it reminded me of a Fedora distro used years ago...;)

graphical interfaces are not exclusive to Mac. Many OS share similar traits because they are supposed to be getting easier to use overall.

It's all okay - Microsoft is denying it ever happened.

Microsoft has blamed one of its own, calling “inaccurate and uninformed” comments Wednesday that its new Windows 7 operating system was inspired by the Mac. Wednesday, Microsoft partner group manager Simon Aldous told a magazine the software giant’s OS aimed to mimic the Mac’s graphics.

“Unfortunately this came from a Microsoft employee who was not involved in any aspect of designing Windows 7,” Brandon LeBlanc wrote at the Windows Blog Wednesday evening.

This latest comment appears to back-pedal on an interview Aldous gave to PCR, in which he stated: “What we’ve tried to do with Windows 7 – whether it’s traditional format or in a touch format – is create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics.”

Consumers have commented on how some graphic elements – such as the Windows 7 taskbar and the Mac OS X doct – behave alike. Wall Street Journal columnist Walt Mossberg had also noted the similarities.

And BSD predated Linux by about 15 years - originally developed at Berkeley in 1977...
Not really, Unix was developed in 1969, BSD was derived from Unix.

That it was derived from Unix was a given, I thought...
Sorry, I misread Linux for Unix. Me look stupid.

PS: I dealt with Bell Labs in the 70's and 80's.

Oh, but I think he has surpassed his own stupidity many times since then.
He still has not found the bottom.

And the first time I played with Ubuntu it reminded me a lot of OS X. Even the developers of Ubuntu say that they need to make it "feel" more like OS X in order to appeal to the masses.

I don't know of any Linux feature that Apple has ever copied. If you can show us one, go ahead.

Since Ubuntu was around before OS X the reverse is more likely.

Was just going by appearances. When first playing with a Mac 3 yrs ago, its desktop reminded me of an early Fedora distro used yrs ago....;)

Don't know if "copied" is the right word, and it's a Unixy or X thing rather than a Linux thing per se, but the multiple virtual desktops came late to OSX.

And, FWIW, under the hood, OSX relies on a slew of open source tools, many of which owe much of their development to Linux-based developers (even the BSD projects depend on/uses the GNU compiler suite and associated tools, and the significant proportion of that development over the last decade has been under Linux).

BTW, OSX, which I like and use, is essentially a polished and updated version of Jobs' NeXt OS/NeXtStep from nearly two decades ago, and NeXt, like OSX, is a layer that runs on top of a BSD flavour ("Darwin" is now the associated open source project), which in turn runs on top of a Mach kernel originally from CMU. (Which, parenthetically, isn't exactly the same thing as being "Unix-based".)

Also interesting to note, before Apple released OSX, it was actually experimenting with a Linux port to its hardware (this was pre-Intel). The project still, after a fashion, lives on as an independent community-led effort: http://www.mklinux.org/
