Does anyone here ever get those stupid emails, about some diplomatic member of an African nation sending saying they need your help in transferring millions of dollars out of their country?

I believe they are called Nigerian 419 emails. They are all bullshit i just want everyone to know not to fall for any of these scams because they will ask you to send them money to pay for taxes, etc. to have the money released to you and it will never happen!

Im not speaking to you as a victim but just someone whos sick and tired of seeing all these BS emails flood my inbox.

Here is a website that explains the scam:

I actually had a neighbour who started buying expensive things, put her house up for sale, planned on moving somewhere posh. She confided to me that she was about to come into rather a lot of money. She fell hook, line and sinker for the Nigerian deal. I didn't know whether to laugh or feel sorry for her.

Does this mean the Treasurer of Imgonafuckyououtayourmoney is not going to wire transfer $3,000,000,000,000 into my account on Monday?
I just sent him my SP & massage allowance for next 5 years to cover expenses.

Any SPs out there want to offer some free service to a broke but well meaning hobbyist. There is a .0000001% chance that I will be receiving a large sum of money soon and I will share it equally with any SP who is prepared to work on consignment.

Those scams have been going for years. I first one I got must have been 15 years ago, by registered mail. I had never heard of them before, and phoned the police. The answer I got was "the officer handling the Nigerian scams is out at the moment", so they were well known even then.

A few years ago the CBC (I think) did an expose. Apparently, at that time anyway, several Canadians would show up each week in Lagos in response. After they got scammed out of as much as these crooks could get, and got wise to what was going on, they would often go to the Canadian Embassy for advice. The advice they would get was, "Get the hell out of Nigeria, your life could be in danger".

And yet, these scams continue.

No scam A.N. For you I will sign over the Certificate of Authenticity that was sent to me by the Treasurer. I trust you will give me back my share when the funds arrive.

I would never screw you Anais. er well.. I mean I would never take advantage of you. Uh well I mean I would never give you the shaft. er well

The hell with it. You can have the entire $3,000,000,000,000 when it shows up!

I read somewhere . . . .

that there is a group of people who's hobby is to respond to these people and string them along making them believe that they are actually going along with it. The idea is to waste the scammers time and have some fun in the process. I think they even have a website where they trade stories and tips on how to scew them over. I think the story was in the Star maybe several months ago. It may be possible to search on line for the story at the Star site.

This scam is one of the oldest in the books. Can't believe anyone actually falls for it. Guess its true about a sucker born every minute.

I've been getting these e-mails from different banks about some security problem and that I need to e-mail them my bank account, credit card and PIN numbers to them to protect my accounts or they will be temporarily suspended.

Named for the section o the Nigerian penal cade that the scammers are violating. There have actually been some arrests in Nigeria lately. The last e-mail I got was from Korea or some place, but pretty much the same theme.

Another thing about these Nigerian 419 scams is that the perpetrators are starting to give people doctored cheques in the five-figure range or more. They get these cheques by stealing mail from Canada Post trucks among other means. They steal the cheques and change things on the cheque like the original amount and change the recipient's name to match the scamee.

The checks are doctored by soaking them in solvent that removes most inks. The best defence is to get a GEL Pen (anywhere these days) to use for making out all checks.
