But that didn't stop Nicole Kidman from turning on her own industry to accuse it of fuelling violence against women by portraying them as weak sex objects.
The Oscar-winning actress claimed that film makers could do more to guard against such violence, but insisted the industry was making efforts to address the issue.
The 42-year-old made the comments as she gave evidence to the U.S. Congress, which is considering legislation to address violence against women overseas.
But when politicians at the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee began to question Miss Kidman on Hollywood's role, she admitted more could be done to guard against abuse.
When asked by Republican Dana Rohrabacher whether the film industry had 'played a bad role' in the way it portrayed women, Kidman replied 'Probably'.
She quickly went on to say she had refused to take roles that she believed demeaned women.
'I can't be responsible for all of Hollywood, but I can certainly be responsible for my own career,' she added.
Miss Kidman was speaking in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the UN Development Fund for Women to promote the International Violence Against Women Act, which has stalled going through Congress.
She said that violence against women was 'the most systematic, widespread human rights violation in the world'.
However, some Hollywood insiders were quick to point out that Miss Kidman has starred in several films featuring explicit sex scenes.
In 1999, she appeared in the box-office flop Eyes Wide Shut with her then husband, Tom Cruise, which was subject to censorship controversies due to its graphic sex scenes.
In 2004, Miss Kidman stoked more controversy when the movie Birth debuted to a chorus of boos at the Venice International Film Festival.
In one shocking scene, she appeared naked in a bathtub with a young boy.
The movie centres around a fragile young widow named Anna, who believes her dead husband has been reincarnated as a ten-year-old boy.
At the time, the actress said: 'Yes, it's an unusual scene, but the whole film is unusual. It's not about sex, you know, it's certainly not about sex. It's about love, it's about being under the spell of somebody.'
In the 2003 film Dogville, directed by Lars von Trier, Miss Kidman's character is seen being humiliated, raped and then chained to a large iron wheel.
And in her Hollywood debut, the 1989 thriller Dead Calm, she shares a graphic sex scene with actor Billy Zane.
Miss Kidman - who won an Oscar for her portrayal of novelist Virginia Woolf in the 2002 film The Hours - will shortly be seen in movie musical Nine, which also features Daniel Day-Lewis and Dame Judi Dench.
