Ilya Kovalchuk update. Now it looks as though he will re-sign with the Devils. He has turned down the LA Kings best offer and it appears the Islanders took their offer of $100mil over 10 years off the table.
He is now looking at an average of $8.5 per over seven years.

I think the reason Burke appears to not be interested in him is he commited a Burke faux pas by talking about how he would like to come to Toronto while still under contract. If I remember Kovy began talking during the regular season.

as did Vancouver forwards Tanner Glass, Jannik Hansen and Mason Raymond.
glass and hansen will likely be traded if there is any market for them at all. mike gillis has said we need a much bigger 4th line so hansen and glass don't fit in.

raymond will likely get somewhere between $2.75-3.25 million per year. imo worth every cent.

the canucks are right up against the cap now with mason raymond and cody hodgson unsigned ($1.67 million rookie cap). look for kevin bieksa and possibly shane o'brien to be moved.

Kovalchuk needs to end his dicking around.
Either go to Hollywood and play with the kids in LA, or stay in Jersey with a pretty decent offer (7yrs/60 million). I wouldn't take the Islanders offer cause they are still going to be bad for the next few years. He wants to win - then hurry up and decide between LA and NJ.

Nabokov to KHL - 4yrs / 24 million - shame to see him leave the NHL, but I think the Olympics ruined him. And he never took a talented Sharks team deep enough into the playoffs. When the Flyers (and their revolving door of netminders) isn't interested in signing you. You know you are done in the NHL.

Another decent 20-30 goal forward teams should be calling is Alex Frolov (LA Kings).

Kovy cannot make up his mind due in part because LA cannot decide whether they want to sign him or not ... they are back in, as of the report I read this morning.

Blackhawks still need to make moves. 14 players under contract/ on roster and $3.6 cap room left.
Works out to be $0.401 avg to fill out 23 man roster. They need to sign playoff hero goalie Niemi and that will take at least two million in my opinion. I hope Burke is on the phone with young Bowman.

Philadelphia has 22 players signed and they are $1.422 over the cap, but they are intending to trade Simon Gagne.
Gagne has waved his no trade clause and he would clear up the cap issue the team has. Subtract his $5.25 and that leaves slightly more then $3.8 to sign two players.

Vancouver has the maximum 23 players on the NHL roster, but are $0.358 over the cap. They have nine d-men and 12 forwards on the roster. Mason Raymond remains unsigned.

Just updating, nothing major has happened ... yet

NHL minimum wage is $500,000( five hundred thousand ).
Roster is 23 players.

Expect some moves from the following teams.

Philadelphia now $2.5 over cap. 23 players signed.
Signed Zherdev to one year, $2.0.
UFAs Krajicek, Asham, among others, are unsigned.
RFA Powe is also unsigned.
To the best of my knowledge Gagne has not been moved yet.
Carter, RFA in his final year, does not have a clause.

Vancouver is just $0.35 over. 23 players signed.
Mason Raymond(RFA) still unsigned.

Chicago is $0.113 under the cap, but only have 15 players signed.
Niemi(RFA) remains unsigned.
Hawks matched the offer to Hjalmarsson. $3.5 per, four years.

Calgary is at $0.65 under. 22 signed.
RFAs Ian White and Brett Sutter remain unsigned.

Boston is about $1.7 under, but have 18 signed.
Wheeler(RFA) is unsigned.
Can they move Thomas and his $5.0 per for three more seasons ?

Pittsburgh is $2.17 under. 20 signed.
Looks like Ponikarovsky, Guerin, Fedotenko and McKee will move on.

Montreal is $4.7 under the cap. 20 players signed.
Their apparent number one goalie, Carey Price, remains unsigned.

Toronto is $1.1 under. 22 players signed.
Expect Kaberle to be traded, which would free up an additional $4.2 in cap room.
Could Finger be traded or more likely sent to Marlies, if moved at all ? If yes this could free up $3.5 under the cap.
Depending on who comes back if/when Kaberle is traded, these moves could mean the Leafs would have almost $10. mil in cap room and a roster of 20.
I am sure Burke is preping for a big trade, maybe that #1 center.

I used Capgeek for above numbers.

wow they're still in trouble even after the fire sale so far. even if they find 7 pluggers at league minimum to fill the roster, they still need to move $3.5m more salary and sign niemi.

serves them right for 'cheating' the cap system last year. guess it paid off in the short term with a stanley cup but the hawks have too many really big contracts. thank you huet for your 5.625m off the cap space. :)

One team climbs out, another drops in

The Philadelphia Flyers took care of their cap issue by trading Simon Gagne to Tampa. They now have just over $1.0 in cap room with 23 players signed.

New Jersey signed Kovalchuk and are now in need of making a move. The Devils are $1.8 over with only 20 signed players on the roster.

Chicago is $1.0 over and they only have 17 roster players.

Numbers from Capgeek.
All $0.0 in millions.

Montreal
On capgeek.com, Jay Rosehill is listed as a non-roster player ($512,500) .

capgeek shows the Leafs as having $2,025,834 in cap space, and 21 players on the roster.
I also wonder why they're off by more than $1.8 million from one another.......which of those two sites is more accurate?

I posted those Leaf stats last week

On July 15 the Leafs were $1.1 under. 22 players signed.
They(the Leafs or Capgeek) have since moved Irwin($0.9) off the NHL roster.

As of today on Capgeek the Leafs are $2,025,834 under the cap and have 21 players on the NHL roster. I expect a few more moves in the coming days/weeks.

Vancouver signs Mason Raymond for two years at $2.55 per. They now have 23 roster players, but are over the cap by $2.685.
However all is OK in BC because Salo is conveniently injured so his $3.5 comes off the cap ... for now.

This means the Canucks have 22 signed players and just over $0.8 to play with.

lol. i have to agree with you that salo is conveniently injured.

burrows is out as well until november, recovering from surgery. his $2m comes off the cap as well. this is another blessing in disguise allowing 2 of 3 rookies to make the team, hodgson, schroeder, or shirokov.

great signing by gillis avoiding arbitration. raymond has so much potential. just hope he's more consistent.

sooner or later bieksa will be traded. the whole salo scenario is just to get better offers from other teams.

I believe all but Niemi have signed and avoided arbitration. I understand that the arbitrator will make his decision by sometime on Saturday.

An arbitrator awarded Niemi $2.75 for next season. The Blackhawks will now have to decide whether to sign him for that amount or walk away making him a free agent.

Blackhawks will make a decision on Niemi's status today. The Hawks have to make one of three choices.
1. Accept the arbitrator's decision and keep Niemi at $2.75 for one more season at least.
B. Walk away for the goalie, allowing him to become a UFA.
Third. Attempt a sign and trade.

Rumour has it that they are in talks with or already have a deal with Marty Turco for one season at less then $2.0.
It is also rumoured that the Hawks will try option 'C' above. If they do they will be dealing from a very weak position, but I guess from their point of view at least they get something in return for Niemi.

Regardless of whether or not they keep Niemi the Hawks have some more tough decisions ahead of them. They are already $400,000 in the hole with only 17 players on the roster without a second goalie after Huet.

I really hope Burke is talking with Bowman(Chicago GM) on a regular basis.

"BALL FOUR !" Hawks Walk, Niemi a Free Agent !

Hawks take the walk and go with Turco. It is being reported that Turco signed for between $1.0 and $1.5 for one season.
Chicago is now almost $2.0mil in the hole with 18 roster players. More changes coming in the Windy City.
