Some, many or all of the following may or may not be known to you already.

From TSN.

Montreal traded Sergei Kostitsyn to Nashville for Dustin Boyd and Dan Ellis.
They also re-signed Pouliot and Pyatt to one year deals.

Jonathan Cheechoo has fallen on hard times. He had his contract bought out by Ottawa yesterday. There was only one year remaining at $3.5 mil. He played in 61 games scoring five and assisting on nine.

Mike Modano is likely done with the Dallas Stars. They did not offer him a contract. He may retire.

Oilers in talks to make a deal to run Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. They claim although talks on a new arena in Edmonton are dragging this is not meant as a threat of any kind. Just poor timing I guess. We will see.
..... The Hamilton Oilers vs Toronto Maple Leafs .... hmmmm.

Speaking of the Oilers, they placed Ethan Moreau, Robert Nilsson and Patrick O'Sullivan on waivers on Tuesday in order to buy them out.
The Oilers also choose to allow Ryan Potulny and Marc-Antoine Pouliot to hit the open market on Thursday. The two were not offered contracts.

Colorado acquired Dan Winnik from the Coyotes for a fourth rounder in 2012.

Flyers have their goalie ? They acquired the rights to now ex-Shark Nabokov. The goalie told Philly that it is likely he will test the free agent market on Thursday.

From a few days ago, Dan Hamhuis was traded again. He is now a Penguin. Flyers get 2011 third rounder.

And this one is over a week old, but the Bruins acquired Nathan Horton from Florida for Dennis Wideman and the 15th pick in this draft and 3rd rounder next year. Also going to the Panthers was Greg Campbell.

Some pending free agents I would consider if I were the Leafs GM.

Centermen

Matthew Lombardi(Phoenix) ... My first choice of the entire free agent pool. I do not think he will cost all that much.

Vinny Prospal(NYR) ... I like him and his points, but I also do not like him. Something about him makes me nervous. I would really explore the trade route before signing him.

Eric Belanger(Wash) ... At the right price, a solid centerman, but age.

John Madden(Chicago) ... He seems to collect Cup rings everywhere he goes. One season if he does not cost too much ... it could work.

==========================
Wingers

Raffi Torres(Buffalo) ... I would like to see the Leafs bring this guy home. A physical player who can also score. My second overall free agent choice.

Colby Armstrong(Atlanta) ... I like him for the right $.

Arron Asham(Philly) ... Another one to consider when filling out the roster.

Paul Kariya(ST.L) ... At the right price, for one year and if he can still score, he would be a nice fit in TO. If only for the shootouts.

Kovalchuk(NJD) ... Not happening ... not in Toronto. Too much $.

=================
D-men

Dan Hamhuis(Nashville/Philly/Pittsburgh) ... Make room for this guy ! Trade Kaberle and send Finger to the Marlies NOW ! Probably will not fit($) on the Leafs with the current line up even if you remove Kaberle's and Finger's contracts.

Anton Volchenkov(Ottawa) ... A Senator I would love to see in a Leaf uniform, but too expensive. Damn salary cap.

Paul Martin(NJD) ... How much will he command ?

I don't see the sense in signing old guys who may have a year left in them. It's not like the Leafs are going to be a contender next season.

Or any other season for that matter!

I think the Cup is headed back to Pittsburgh after the Penguins sign two defencemen to five years deals.

Martin at $5 per.
Zbynek at $4 per.

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
So Montreal is counting on Price again, with Auld as a back-up. Looks like they won't even make the playoffs with those two.

Before Montreal starts to lean on Price they better sign him. As of this afternoon, he was not signed.

Ottawa
It looks like a desprite move in signing 36 year old Gonchar for $16.5mil over three years. That is $5.5 per.

Calgary
What the hell !?!
Jokenen back in Calgary, Why ?

Vancouver
Now they have the defence to maybe get by the Hawks ... on the other hand now last year's 'Nucks could get by next year's Hawks.

Who gives a crap. Hockey is boring and for the most part skilless. Most of the goals are scrappy and look like crap.

You are entitled to your opinion. Glad you could make it and spend time here on a hockey thread. You seem to watch enough to be able to form an opinion on the 'better then soccer' game.

Flyers looking to trade Gagne ? Apparently he has agreed to waive his no trade clause.
According to sources there is nothing imminent. It is an apparent cost cutting move by Philly.

I would take Gagne, but prefer Carter. I think Burke should give the Flyers a call to see if Carter could be traded and what it would take.

They also acquired Dan Hamhuis who is no slouch either. Their d looks solid. Now they need to fill some FW depth needs.

Except Dan Hamhuis is a Vancouver Canuck, $27 M over 6 years.

They acquired his rights but guess they couldn't sign him. I think they would have been better off with him than Z Michalek.

From the Globe and Mail.

Niemi tops list of players heading to arbitration

31 athletes going to the table NHLPA says

Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Antti Niemi heads the list of 31 players headed to salary arbitration, the NHL Players' Association said Monday night.

Niemi — who helped Chicago to its first Stanley Cup since 1961 — will be looking for a raise from the $827,000 he made in 2009-10.

The Oilers, Canucks, Thrashers and Capitals top the list of teams heading to arbitration with three players each.

Washington forwards Eric Fehr and Tomas Fleischmann also filed, as did defenceman Jeff Schultz. Atlanta forwards Ben Eager, Andrew Ladd and Clarke MacArthur also elected to go to arbitration.

Centre Gilbert Brule, goaltender Jeff Drouin-DesLauriers and defenceman Jean-Francois Jacques filed from the Oilers, as did Vancouver forwards Tanner Glass, Jannik Hansen and Mason Raymond.

Other notable players filing were Ottawa defenceman Chris Campoli and forward Peter Regin, Calgary defenceman Ian White, Philadelphia forward Daniel Carcillo and Boston forward Blake Wheeler.

Twenty players filed for arbitration last summer.

Hearings will be held in Toronto from July 20 to Aug. 4, with the specific dates to be announced Tuesday.

I believe there is still a move or two that the Chicago Black Hawks will have to make.
I will be interested to see the result of the Niemi situation.
