one thing i did think of for a rule change would be to have the all-star game winner (if east vs. west) get home ice for the stanley cup playoffs. usually it is elite players from playoff bound teams that want to take the weekend off to gain a few extra cheat days of rest... my sidney crosby included... i can't blame them- the healthiest skilled teams are always the ones that make it the furthest into the post season... but, give the all-star game some meaning.

You can't do this while fans are voting who gets in...you'd have fans in the East voting for the worst players in the West and vice versa... :)

You'd also have players getting hurt because with something at stake defensmen would start hitting... I'd hate to lose Jeff Carter because of an All-Star game that was played to determine home ice for the finals as I'm sure you'd hate to lose Malkin or Crosby.

Baseball can get away with this because it isn't that physical of a game.

What I'd like to see change is awarding a losing team a point....

Give teams 2 points for a regulation win and 1 point for an OT or Shootout win...with the losing team getting nothing... no more all important point and then you'll see some exciting hockey...

But make the OT 10 minutes of 5 on 5

Also make Regulation wins the first tie breaker rule to establish division winners and playoff seeding, with OT winds next... you still get the possible excitement of the SO with less emphasis on its meaning... Teams that have a lot of shotouts will be worn out playing 10 minute 5 on 5 OT...

good points jack'd. btw i heard Bill Clemment report a stat that if Jeff Carter did not become hot the flyers would still be in the same position they were 3 weeks into the season without his goals. talk about a rockstar season! hope it continues for him. my brother played hockey with him in the soo a few years ago... great kid!

I like Carter...he is a very humble guy. I know I'm getting old though because he held the elevator door for me a Brookstreet in Ottawa, and said after you sir.

He started coming on last season when Richard's went down and missed 10 games...similar to Malkin when the PENS lost Crosby with the high ankle sprain. He's been on a tear since. I don't know if I totally agree with Clement...since the Flyers have had a number of guys step up when other players get hurt... Briere has played 9 games this season and he scored 30+ goals last year. I think a lot of people forget he's on the Flyers because it's been so long that he's played. Fortunately Gagne has manage to stay healthy as has Richards and Carter. All three are a huge part of the Flyers success this season, no doubht about that.
