No Leafs, Raps lose, Jays lose ... at least the Stanley Cup playoffs start tonight.

I guess, for this playoff, I will jump on a couple of band wagons to start.
Go Hawks, my pick to win the Cup.
Go Ducks, goaltending will be their downfall though.
Go Pens, as much as I like Crosby, no Letang and Fleury seems allow bad goals at the worst times, I do not see them beating the Rangers.

Controversy on the first night.

Subban ... 5 and a game !

What do you think ?

No, I say a double minor for slashing would have sufficed or the 5 if it did not carry the GM with it.
However there was a bit of a windup in the slash. I guess I am kind of OK with the call if it is called the same across the board.

It was OK in the end, but Ottawa gave Montreal all they could handle.
I think this series just took nasty turn, now I cannot wait for game two.
The first Ottawa goal gave them a bit of confidence, fluke though it may be.
I got caught up in the drama of the second period, six of the seven goals scored, and forgot about the Caps and Iles.
Wild second period, controversy ... this is now the series to watch.

Playoff Ovechkin is boring, I think Tavares will have a better series.
I liked, from what I saw, the play of Ryan Strome.

Nashville takes 3-0 lead only to be reminded of why the Hawks have recently won the Cup twice ... they are deep and never out of it until the final buzzer.

Calgary surprises Vancouver in game one. Good for them.

One of the refs overheard Subban threaten Stone. NHL will be investigating.

Stephane Quintal is the head of disciplinary action for the NHL, do you honestly think he's going to suspend a Hab during the playoffs? The French stick together.

If it's deliberate then the penalty should be you are out as long as the injured player

It fit at the time, and he should have been given two game suspension. Yes, any series can get nasty, but too many factors were involved with this slash
- The position of his hands. PK slid his one hand down to hold the stick like a bat
- The height the stick was raised before bringing it down onto Stones arm
- The location he was hitting

For the above, he earned a game suspension. But what I found truly classless, and what would earn a 2nd game was how unsympathetic PK was after the hit.
In the hallway, out of uniform, many saw PK go livid when he was told Stone was back on the bench. WTF? Most would show relief they DIDN'T break a guys arm/wrist and just pissed away the rest of the season.. not PK, he's mad a guy might be ok?

For that added lack of sportsmanship, PK earned a 2 game break to me. Even today, what does PK tell the media? "I've been hit harder then that"

Seriously, is that was that NHL is becoming? No matter the depth of injury, the recipient was hurt badly, might not play the series, while the other could care less.
Upon further review ... maybe PK should have received a game or two.
However ... if there was a suspension, adding game(s) because someone thinks the offending player was not sympathetic, Kathleen the league can never go there. I agree with you on so many things, I always look forward to reading your thoughts, but we disagree here. It would be like an NHL version of opening Pandora's Box.

As to Subban's reaction, remember it is the playoffs and emotion is running high. Subban gets a 5 GM which he thinks is too much, then he hears Stone is back on the ice before his penalty is even over. You have factor in that no one knew the extent of Stone's injury at the time.
Further as the game ends, there is Stone throwing punches in the scrum. Who is to say the fracture did not happen there ?
This may even have added to the decision to not suspend Subban.

The NHL really cannot go there. That is even worse then attempting to add game(s) based on the emotional reaction of the offending player.

PK could have been given a game or two. It was a careless and excessive use of the stick whether targeted or not, so could have justified it.

But ottawa would have continued to whine... Be it Murray or the little man syndrome fans.

Wow , iron head hits a 1.000 on this one.

The other reason Subban was upset at the time do the play was that he believed Player 61 was either faking or injured but really selling it. Let's remember that he was rolling around which is not a normal reaction for anwrist injury. The normal reaction to an arm injury is to grimace, say fuck, and head to the bench. You do not roll around like a leg or knee or head injury.
