When is the next Windows version going to be released? I've heard 2009, but early or late in the year?

...I heard 3rd quarter 2009, but knowing Microsoft I would not put any money on that especially after the Vista saga

much thanks, data...
i was afraid they'd start phasing out XP (despite it being probably one of their best platforms...)

a new laptop i bought came with vista loaded on it...
will i have any probs reformatting and installing XP?

Sure you can. I just turned on my old PC long enough to update XP Pro and the AV, haven't used it for almost a week since I'm on linux most of the time now anyway. All updates for XP went through fine.

I don't have any problems with Vista either on my new laptop mainly for the same reason.....spend most of the time on linux with it also.

This way I avoid all those problems data1960 listed in his Post #7....:D

At this point I could care less what M$ or more pricy Apple do, I don't need either.

If I have a choice on a new PC, I'd pick XP. Unless a user has program incompatibilities or needs to support older hardware, I believe Vista to be a satisfactory OS for a new machine for a non power user. Vista SP1 is suppose to address the performance issue.
After I put in SP1 on Vista, things ran better on my laptop. Before SP1 Vista was OK but buggy. I like Vista, just don't use it that much.

great feedback, guys...
thanks!

i would classify myself as a power user - to the point where my company's it department has even given me local admin rights on my machine...

they know i won't screw it up...

i'll validate whether i've installed vista's sp1 and see how it goes from there before i do any reformatting...

again - thanks for the feedback!
