Any good places to start to learn about newsgroups, how they work, what are good ones to join (i.e. fast, reliable, wide selection) etc. Looking for comics, movies, music. PMs for private usenets would be appreciated.

Googled and found this site recommended these third party groups

http://www.newsgroupdownloaders.com/newsgroupservers.html

are these any good? what kind of fees can one expect? is third party the way to go?

I assume I need a program to download stuff

http://www.newsgroupdownloaders.com/

Android seems to be the one that suits my needs best are there better ones out there?

I've been using www.usenetserver.com for several years. I don't recall it ever being down and everything is complete.

I've not compared prices recently, but at the time it was by far the cheapest of any of the others.

Software wise, I use NewsBin (bought it, it's worth it).

First you need newsgroup access/subscription, I suggest getting a pay per GB at the start until you know the ropes. Try astraweb, they have great prices and fast speed, http://www.news.astraweb.com/plans.html

Secondly you need to join a site that indexes the downloads, it is like what the piratebay was to torrents. www.nzbmatrix.com, that is what I use, I think it costs $10 for a lifetime membership.

Thridly you need to get the client to connect to the newgroup server and download the porn you desire. I use "nzbomatic".

Basically this is how it works for me. I log into nzbmatrix.com, I browse until I see something I want, from nzbmatrix I download a small file into nzbomatic. The small file lists where the actual program is on the newgroup server, nzbomatic will go to the newsgroup server and download the software.

Speed is great, I can always max out my 6mbs DSL connection.

LOL Bishop.

Why assume I'm downloading porn? Okay I probably will "browse" the adult sections.:D

Thanks for the intro guys much like any new (to me) technology I'm slow to get on the wagon but once I do it's fullsteam ahead.

I max out my ISP every month too.

I used Giganews in the past when my ISP allowed 5GB/month free. It was plenty for me since music was all I was after. 5GB = about 50-55 albums/month which was plenty.

Now there are some cheaper than Giganews that throw in SSL for free if you hunt around. Newsgroups are just a little bit more complicated to learn than torrents but once you use them they blow away torrents for finding ANYTHING you desire.

GrabIt was the free newsreader I used and it worked fine with Windows.
For Linux I used Pan newsreader which setup more easy than GrabIt in Windows.

Newsgroups are great for finding ANYTHING you can imagine with very fast downloading speeds all the time. I would get a full 320 bitrate music album in 1 or 2 minutes! Never got a bad/bogus file.
